Manganese and anxiety

Posted by Lao Tzu on May 7, 2010, at 11:03:32

I find that supplementing with a little manganese each day helps with my anxiety disorder in addition to zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6. I only supplement with 10mg of manganese per day because I cannot tolerate anymore than this. It is helpful at reducing anxiety as is zinc, magnesium, and especially vitamin B6. Low dose selenium is also helpful for anxiety and depression.

I use manganese gluconate, which is the most common form. Again, 10mg is the max for me. I'll feel worse if I take 20mg per day. That's just too much for me, but I have read that some schizophrenics actually do well on 30mg per day or higher, however, the form of manganese is called Ziman drops, which contains zinc as well. Ziman drops are useful in schizophrenics when the tissue copper is very high.

Thanks for posting your experience with vitamins and minerals. I think minerals are the least understood elements of nutrition.

I bought some manganese today & was disturbed to read that it can be very neurotoxic, at least in excess.

I hope there's a big gap between reasonable supplementation & excess!

What does Loa Tzu experience if he takes to much?

Yes, manganese can be neurotoxic in extremely high amounts, such as people who work in manganese mines and are breathing it in. Taking 10mg of manganese gluconate per day is actually beneficial, not harmful. It helps my anxiety. If I take more than 10mg per day, I don't know how to describe it, but I just don't feel very good. 10mg is my tolerable limit, and I feel it is very helpful for the associated anxiety related to schizophrenia. So don't worry too much. If you're concerned, just try about 5mg per day. I've read that some schizophrenics, especially the ones with high tissue copper, benefit from 30mg or more per day. However, I suspect that most people don't need that much manganese. 5-10mg per day is probably sufficient.

Thanks-Loa Tzu

I imagine there's a big difference between a sensible dose & a toxic dose................
