Scientology

I realize it's a very anti-psych religion, but I was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with it? did it feel at all 'cultish'?
thanks for any info!- judy

I did too, and the website is what made me take a closer look. I'll probably have to make the assumption that people who post on a psych board aren't going to have an anti-psychiatrist religion as their own.
take care, judy
p.s. I did take the personality test found on their website, it was pretty interesting. there's a Church of Scientology nearby, apparently I can go there to find out the complete results of test.

Werner Erhard of EST and his "Esylon by the Sea" institute at Big Sur near Santa Cruz, CA, was the rage in most of the 1970's. Along came this Sci-Fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard with motives to appeal to the wanting of the undiscovered spirit in folks, and OBTW charge for each discovery.

The plan became a grand one containing at least eight stages of development. It has been calculated that to reach the ruling “Level Eight” of Scientology development, one must have contributed the total amount of at least $100,000, and over a period of not less than 15 years. This indicates that "Level Eights" can vote wisely on the future of Scientology.

Scientology has a secret today. Werner Erhard and Scientology had a falling out sometime between Hubbard's death in 1986, and Scientology publicly chastising Erhard and EST in 1988. In 1991, EST was a skeleton entity whose assets were turned over to "Landmark Education". The secret is that Scientology is the "Tax Free" spiritual entity and "Landmark Education" is the secular and public entity, providing corporate America a new vision.

I will probably get into hassles for saying this here, but I freely quote "Landmark Education" for three reasons:

1. …because Landmark has 18 very quotable goals to provide corporations new vision while prying loose the individual executive from his "stuck thinking". These are quite useful to us all.

2. …because I do not respect L. Ron Hubbard, nor Werner Erhard, and therefore feel released from responsibility.

3. …because Landmark tries to force secrecy onto their new followers and trainees, along with asking more money at each level of membership in "the club", similar to Scientology.

Please don't mistake my sharing with aciduosness. I am not angry with Scientology, Landmark, L Ron Hubbard, or Werner Erhard. I have no personal beef with any of them. My motivation is to imply the wisdom of safely approaching them all cautiously, perhaps with an 11 foot pole.

But that's just my story.......

The US Government calls Scientology a religion. It may only be for tax purposes. Some folks are true believers and would fight Dr Bob on 1st Amendment rights to and share unmolested.

I'm with you whatever you choose.

I had no idea about the levels involved within the church, thanks for the info. I seriously was considering going to the local Church of Scientology to learn more, I wonder if they would have volunteered this information- I have no problem contributing money to a church/religion that contributes to the welfare of others, but this sounds self-serving.

It does make sense for the sharing of experiences to be here, sorry about that. But let's redirect follow-ups regarding its history. Here's a different link:

asking about scientology. it's too confusing for me to chase down threads on other boards. I'll let you know what experiences I have with the Church- unless they get moved.
thanks again for the info- judy
