How do you approach your pdoc to approve the use of a light box for therapy? Do I just ask him? Has anyone done this and gotten a rude response? Does the pdoc write some kind of a script? Do I then submit something to my insurance company?

My pdoc told me he thought I could benefit from a lightbox. He also told me that not many insurance companies pay for them. The boxes themselves, that I looked at, were about $500 USD. He did tell me that some places will rent them for a bout $50 for the season. Which is a pretty good deal. I think if you want to ask him about it, just bring up the subject of lightboxes. Ask him what they do, cost, etc. Then tell him you have noticed your depression seems to have gotten worse since winter got here and you would like to try one. (I don't know if your depression has gotten worse, thats just my guess). I don't think he will give you a rude response, lightboxes are viewed as legitimate sources of help for depression (if that's what you were worried about?) Hope all works out for you.
