pdoc wants me to see T

Posted by woolav on June 16, 2005, at 18:11:13

My new pdoc wants me to see a therapist also. I have been to a few T sessions in the past and they never impressed me. I dont know what the point is really. Each time I went, they just want to teach me how to do something. Like, how to stop panic attacks, or how to tell when a hypomanic episode/depressive episode is coming and how to stop it. Is that what therapy is all about? I kinda wanted to just TALK to someone, find out where my problems come from and go from there, but none seem to be like that. Am I just seeing the wrong ones or should i want that type of help??

This partly depends on your part of the world. The therapy you're describing is CBT. And in some places it's the only therapy available, unless you pay privately.

But if you're in an area that has more choice, you know that what you're looking for isn't pure CBT. That's a start.

You might want to check out the library or the internet for information on types of therapy. It sounds like you'd be most interested in interpersonal therapy or something analytical. If you ask potential therapists what sort of therapy they practice, and tell them something of what you're looking for, you should be able to weed out the ones that are clearly unsuitable.

Hi, I agree with Dinah. It might help when you are talking with a new T to let the T know what your goal is for therapy, and what you are looking for. I always appreciate that feedback. Because if you and the T are not on the same page as far as what the therapy is about and what the goal is, it can lead to feeling like you are just spinning your wheels.

Good luck. I hope you find a fabulous T.

Hi Woolav,

Don't think I can add anything to what Dinah or GG said. Just ask the p-doc for a referal to they type of T/therapy your looking for, and tell him you don't want CBT and why. Since he recommended therapy, he might already have something in mind. Did he talk about why he wanted you to go to therapy?

I think CBT is helpful if you want to not feel/think something very specific. Other types of therapy can be more helpful for what you want.

Everyone has great points, thank you. I know my pdoc gave me a card for an associate of his that works in the same office, that i have actually been to once before and he was into CBT. I guess I am going to discuss my thoughts on this with my pdoc at my next appt. (in a month) I know my pdoc also suggested my husband and I see a marriage counciler..(this was due to my last major hypo episode that caused major trust issues for my hubby)
I guess i just am put off with T's around here because one that I saw for about 3 visits, was teaching me how to "Breath" correctly so I could calm myself without meds during anxiety situations..I really dont think I need to spend $75 a pop to be taught to breath....grrrr
