Need advice on how to reduce anxiety symptoms

Posted by Camille Dumont on July 5, 2005, at 8:39:21

I'm at my wit's end. For the past two weeks I've had this feeling in my throat, like there is something stuck in there ... like I'm right on the verge of gagging.

Now its constant so it can't be some piece of food stuck or anything so I'm assuming its anxiety of sorts.

I've tried sleeping more, relaxation, meditation, green tea, warm baths and NOTHING makes its go away. Its driving me nuts!

Anything else I can try? I feel so stupid about this, I don't want to go to the doctor for this as I know he will not find anything wrong my my throat.

Has something recently happened in your life that might have caused an increase in anxiety? Are you certain it's anxiety that's causing it?

How do you know? You should, first and foremost, get checked out by your MD. If there's nothing wrong with your throat, you might want to consult with a psychiatrist for something to alleviate anxiety. I've had that "lump in the throat" sensation and I know it's beyond unpleasant.

Please take care and let us know how you're doing.

I'd get it checked out medically to be sure.

There was someone who posted a while back with a similar problem. He was overly aware of swallowing? I think?

I had this a few years ago. For me it was post nasal drip (not a big deal and fairly minor) but combined with stress and tension it created a real consciousness of swallowing (and difficulty sleeping.) So it could be a combo of physical and psychological.

What can help is if you get a decongestant (google what you need for post nasal drip if you think you have it) and see if that possibly helps. It definitely did for me.

Take care,

Rigby

Well, its how its happening and the fact that I have some of the "other" signs of anxiety like weird chest pain and muscle tension .... something I don't usually get. I also had a physical not 3 months ago and everything was deemed fine.

See the problem is I don't want to go to the doctor. When I was depressed, it ended up in a horrible downward over-medicated spiral and it took more close to a year to free myself from it. I don't want meds anymore ... hence why I posted here rather than the psycho babble board. I don't want to mask the anxiety ... I want to find a way to control it myself.

Thanks for the advice though.

It occured to me that it could be a respiratory thing like seasonal allergies but its at its worse during work which is in a very well ventilated and climatised building. Nose is not blocked either.

Allergies don't necessarily always cause congestion--they can just cause coughs too I believe. You could try an antihistamine and see if that helps too.
