gifts *from* T (long-ish)

Posted by caraher on July 27, 2005, at 15:18:18

Yesterday was my oral dissertation defense, which I passed. It's at this point that people start in with the cracks about being a "doctor" who cannot heal anything. Anyway, I'd scheduled a T appointment for the following morning, which was (of course) this morning.

The session focused on passing the defense, my reactions to it, those of people around me, what I drew from all that, etc. I felt a bit odd because I'd hoped to feel more relieved when it was over, but really mostly felt tired. And the main thing I kept telling people was that I'm not completely done until I make some revisions in my thesis and get the final version approved and submitted. Or in other words, I still haven't done anything yet (basically how I tend to look at my 41 orbits of the Sun).

Anyway, at the end of the session she asked if she could show me something. She removed from the closet a helium "Congratulations!" balloon and a plant, which she gave me! I was really, really surprised! She talked about how excited she was that I'm finally finishing this PhD and thought I should know that, and asked if she could give me a hug (which has never happened before, the only other physical contact we ever had was probably a handshake when we first met).

It was so unexpected... I think this is the one place where others would really appreciate what that was like for me...

How sweet! That must have been so special. And congrats to you. Although you still have some revisions to take care of, you have passed the worst part!

Best,
EE

Congratulations on both!

That was very thoughtful of your therapist. I like a therapist who isn't afraid to cross (not break) boundaries when appropriate.

:-)
Oh, well done.
It is a pretty big thing you know... I mean, how many years of your life have you spent working towards it???
A few revisions... Hmm...
I think they feel obliged to say that ;-)

That sounds really sweet of your t.

Very hip T ... I'm glad she felt she show you how proud she is of you!!

Thank you for sharing. My T would never do something like that in a million years :(
But I'm glad yours did :)

That was so cool of your T to do that! How long have you been working with her? I think a lot of T's are really awesome people inside and outside of work! (but I am a little jeolous!) [but I guess I saw my T in his gym shorts(twice, now), so I guess that is good enough gift for me! lol] sorry , i couldn't help myself! :)

Anyways, congrats! You should feel really proud of yourself!

I've been seeing her almost 5 years if my arithmetic and memory haven't failed me, and I entered grad school full-time ten years ago (though I've been away two years so it's less than 10 years' work).

Thanks for your congratulations too, Babblers :)

Congrats on your defense! THat's the end to a big piece of your life, and the beginning of another??

I also think it's quite quite wonderful of your T to give you gifts. ANd appropriate too.

It made me feel wonderful to read your post, except the bit about you being tired, of course.

She sounds really special. thank you for sharing.

Congrat's to you too! Don't minimize your accomplishment just because there are a few details to take care of. You've obviously worked hard and have earned a few minutes (at least) to feel proud of yourself. Wallow in the good stuff -- it IS allowed!!
