Just didn't connect

Posted by rubenstein on November 8, 2005, at 18:56:07

Do you ever have those days where you just can't find that connection with your T. I had one today. I think I am okay with it, which is a big sign of growth, but I just can't figure out why the connection wasn't there. Maybe I'll ask him if he felt that way too? Hmmm, any suggestions

I had one of those days 2 weeks ago. It seemed to me that something was bothering him. Any possibility you T had something weighing on their mind?

I just hate those days. I'd ask him about it. Let us know.

My only suggestion is to mention it when it happens. I sometimes find that just mentioning changes the dynamic in the room enough to dispell the feeling. Perhaps it drags him back into the room if he's distracted, or perhaps it causes a change in the course of the conversation to what I'm avoiding, if I am avoiding. But I nearly always find it useful.

I agree with letting your T know about how you felt at your next session. I've had sessions w/my T where I just felt like we weren't connecting or on the same wave length or that I was boring him. I hate those sessions. But, I've also found that when I talk to him the next time about the way I felt, there's even more growth and understanding of what actually may have been happening during that "disconnected" session. It can be very enlightening. I don't think even those disconnected sessions are wasted ones at all. I think we can actually learn from them! Anyways, hope I made some sense.

Y'know, I've had that happen and I can't understand why I don't talk about it while it is happening!!
