I want to share this with my T (PICTURES!)

Posted by madeline on May 4, 2006, at 8:22:03

There is one place on this planet I love more than anywhere else, it's a big cat rescue organization around where I live. I volunteer there every weekend, feeding, giving tours, cleaning - just anything really.

We have tigers, and leopards and snow leopards and servals and ocelots (yes we have small cats too!), but I LOVE the tigers. See for yourself why I love them.

For the past 5 years, I have wanted for my therapist to go there and just SEE the place I love best, but he always politely declines. I just don't see what the problem is here, it's not like I am asking him to come to my house for dinner. I'm just asking him to go to a public place, I wouldn't even have to be there! He could go on a tour that I am not leading.

I don't know if I want advice on this, or if I am just venting. I really don't know.

It's sooooo frustrating to slam against that therapeutic boundary again and again and again.

(Yes that is me, the tiger's name is Romeo)

Hi Madeline,

I thought it was interesting that the picture caption was why you like strong fences and yet your T's "fence" is so frusterating. I do agree with that, but it has got me thinking ( beware) that maybe that tiger is like our T and maybe we need that big fence to protect us from those big scary beasts with big teeth. So my T might be a bonobo chimp but he has teeth like a tiger.

Okay maybe I am thinking too much in my head today, but my T appointment is in less than 2 hours so I need to get myself together. Loved your site, loved what you said about Sarah M (one of my favorite singers) and about the curly hair which I also have and I also use that wax to control it. Excuse my while I go whiten my teeth so I look good for my big tiger I am visting soon. LOL

good luck HF! you can do iT! (nm)

I think they kind of prefer to hear about the places we love through our eyes. After all, if he went and didn't like it, it could affect your relationship. Simple little acts like that are fraught with peril. He might be *less* likely to go, knowing that his client had an involvement with the place.

I know it's hard not to share with them the people and things we love. I was mad a long time when my therapist refused to meet with my mother. I thought that he would really be able to understand if he met her. But he wouldn't.

That doesn't mean you can't share the place though. You can bring in photos, or if you have or can rent one of those portable DVD players, you can bring in a DVD.

I really agree with what Dinah said. I imagine he's declining not because he isnt interested, but because it could lead to a strange experience for both of you, depending on how he felt about the place. In a way, it's better than he just has a picture in his mind (or from your photos!) described by you.. without his own personal feelings involved.

By the way, that is a great picture you included. It does look wonderful. I'd love to be able to visit a place like that.. although I dont think you could pay me to get that close! I'm a city girl until just recently. Oh well. One day. :)

How was your session?

you're right of course, but it still is hard. I really want him to come and meet "my" tigers. We talk about them a lot in therapy, and I dream about them a lot.

Him visiting is just a wish I have that won't be fulfilled. It's sad, but I should be used to it.

Sigh.

Been thinking about you a lot, Dinah, if you need anything just babble.

Maddie

Thanks for your post. I have to admit, the first time I met Romeo, I stayed at least 10 feet back from the fence, but over the years he and I have developed an understanding so to speak. He weighs about 800 lbs and is 13 feet from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.
If there was no fence there, I wouldn't be there.

They are AMAZING creatures, and I know that my T is into wildlife and conservation and would like it. But, I guess you are right, it is just too laden with problems for him to go.

Hi!
I have a suggestion, maybe you can make a video for him to watch..of the place, you with the animals...
I did that to my therapist. I wanted her to see my home, my fish, my kitties, my guinea pigs..
I made a video for her to watch, I brought in pictures too. Maybe that would help you?
It did help me to know she watched that video and saw me interacting with my precious animals
just a thought..

I think that's a great idea. I brought in a dvd of a very short excerpt of old home movies and my dad and my most beloved dog just today. I like to share things with my therapist, and videos and pictures are one way I do that.

A video is a great idea thanks!

I think I will make him one. He can watch it when he likes.
Thanks!
