slugdoo....EMDR

Posted by B2chica on July 31, 2007, at 10:03:37

just wanted to say thanks for your suggestion..

>>>I just read a great book on EMDR I got from the library and I have read most of them out there. But it is called "EMDR Transforming Trauma" by Laurel Parnell, Ph.D.
If you look this book on Amazon, you can read the first chapter which talks about her experiece as a patient. This book was so good I read it cover to cover in one day. She talkes about her experieces as being a patient and her experiences using it on her own clients.

i just finished the book. your right, it only took a couple days for me to read (hard to read through with little one:) but read when i could.
it was Very descriptive of how sessions would go.. this is just what i was looking for.

just wanted to say thnx.

Your welcome! ;-)

I am glad you liked the book. I have read most of the books, and many are too "instructional", written for T's, not the average person. So have you talked more about this with your T?

not yet. she just mentioned it last session (the bad one). i see her again today...she may bring it up again..not sure.
i see good and bad with EMDR and still not sure about it.
for me the good would be:
-being able to get stuff out fast.
-better able to release extreme emotions
-way to re-organize the bad in my head...get it out
-maybe i can then remember some good times

the bad could be:
-if my T doesn't do it...not ready to try another i don't build trust well.
-cost of doing EMDR plus T.
-Time that it would take to work through ALL bad memories (many)
-the emotional drain (not good timing with my little one)
-quite frankly, it sounds scary...what if i get so into an emotional state and they can't get me out safely?? what if it brings more to surface?
-i don't have the support from home to have therapy become intensive again...

well. i do think that if time and money weren't an issue i would give it a try.
but since they are...i'm reluctant.

but we'll see.
THANKS AGAIN Sluggy

I'm really glad that I did EMDR a couple of years ago. It was a very long process - the preparation was easily longer than the treatment itself - but it gave me a lot of clarity and peace that I think would have taken years and years of therapy. Perhaps I would never have been able to get to that place without it.

In the hands of a trained and experienced professional, it's a careful and cautious journey through a minefield.

I'm happy to share my experience with you further if you like.

The process itself took about 5 sessions. I was told to expect more or less... it was a different kind of therapy for me because it wasn't my usual therapist, but someone she referred me to specifically for the EMDR. Once the treatment was done, I went back to my regular T.

I found that right after the sessions my head would feel exceptionally clear and light. I felt clean, somehow, and extraordinary. As if I'd be able to hold up my hands and see through them like glass, because I'd be able to see everything just to precisely and sharply. And everything around me seemed more vivid and colourful, and more full of life than usual.

I must remember this. Because it was just my perceptions, of course. The world is as drab or as beautiful as I'm able to see it. Isn't that wild?

I remember too, that this feeling would leave me really abruptly, after an hour or two of treatment. I would make certain that I was home and curled up on a sofa or in bed with a cup of tea when it would hit, because I'd get very tired.
