My therapist does regressive hypnotherapy. This past week she hypnotised me to relive traumatic childhood experiences. Ever since, I have felt extremely depressed.

hey jamal,
I'm sorry that you're not feeling well. I've never done any hypnotherapy. Are you able to remember specifics, or feelings? or is it all subconscious?
Do you and T have a chance to "process" what happens during hypnosis, with traditional talk therapy, journalling etc?
Maybe tell us a little more, if that's okay with you.
take good care,
ll

I have full recollection of what happens during our sessions (I think).
>
> Do you and T have a chance to "process" what happens during hypnosis, with traditional talk therapy, journalling etc?The first part of the session we do talk therapy, and then we end the session with hypnosis. There's no debriefing after the hypnosis.
> Maybe tell us a little more, if that's okay with you.Under hypnosis, she had me regress to the moment of my birth. Note that I was delivered using a cesarean section and with general anesthesia. The conversation went something like this:-
T: How do you feel?
J: Excited.
J: Wait... I also feel... angry...
T: Why?
J: Because I'm not ready to be born yet.
T: What do you see?
J: I see gloved hands pulling me from my mother's womb.
T: How do you feel?
J: I feel anxious and scared.
T: Why?
J: Because they're taking me away from my mother.
T: What's happening now?
J: I'm lying alone in an infant bed in hospital.
T: How do you feel?At this stage I began crying and couldn't answer her. She asked me another few times how I felt, but I couldn't speak. I wanted to tell her "I don't know how to describe my feelings" but somehow I couldn't get the words out. After the session I kept crying. I'm a twenty-six year old guy; it was embarrassing.
This was about five days ago. Since then, I've felt profoundly sad.
I'm not sure whether these are actual memories or merely confabulations, and I don't know what the therapeutic benefit of all this is supposed to be.

I think I like hypnosis. It's the regression aspect that troubles me a bit.
I've had some extremely powerful moments under hypnosis, what I'd almost describe as spiritual.
I get the impression that hypnosis is somewhat frowned upon by the medical orthodoxy.

Hi Jamal,
Hyponosis is okay i think but maybe you need more time to process the stuff you went back to before you leave your T.. It seems to me that it might bring up things for you and you don't have a chance to deal with them before you are on your own. Maybe you could suggest that you do hyponosis first and then have some time to process??? I don't think I would do well at all leaving things open for me to try to process alone.. good luck.. don't give up

Jamal I am of the understanding that it's total relaxation and you would not do anything under that you wouldn't do while not under. I just question and forgive me my unknown knowledge. I just have no understanding how you could remember being born and how you felt? Can you explain how it works? Love Phillipa

How do you tell if therapy is bad for you when the feeling that it is might be 'resistance'?

Hi Jamal,
My T also does this, but only when EMDR isn't being effective. I think feeling depression is normal when you back and work through the old stuff. Sometimes it will feel worse before it feels better. Have you told your T about how you have been feeling?

The little I know of regressive therapy, is that it can be very dangerous, in the hands of someone who isn't well trained. It isn't something I would ever do.
Follow your feelings and instincts; they are the best indicator of what is best for you.
Talk to other therapists, and/or do research on the subject.

But it's so much effort to find a new therapist and start therapy all over. :(
Anyway, I have another session tomorrow. Maybe what happened in my last session was just a once-off event.

You should have the answer found somewhere in the answers you gave
T: How do you feel?
J: Excited.
J: Wait... I also feel... extremely pleased
T: Why?
J: Because I'm sick of hanging around.
T: What do you see?
J: I see gloved hands pulling me from my mother's womb.
T: How do you feel?
J: A little apprehensive, but very pleased.
T: Why?
J: Because they're taking me away from my mother.
T: What's happening now?
J: I'm lying alone in an infant bed in hospital.
T: How do you feel?
J: Glad to get out and about. Why didn't you give thise answers?
Because they are the wrong answers?
Because it was not what was expected of you?

I had another session, where she had me substitute memories of abandonment with memories of feeling loved. I feel much better now.
