What would you think if your T said

Posted by Moonshadow on September 6, 2009, at 10:32:11

"you're really messed up". ?

On Monday that's what she said. Not in a mean way, just very matter of fact. I can't remember the context. I wasn't acting crazy, and I hadn't hurt myself.

On my way home, I thought it was funny. Psychiatrists aren't supposed to say that, right? I'm not offended at all. The thing is, I don't think I'm that bad.

Now, this is the same T who told me I had more scars than she had ever seen. My T is not some newbie- I think she's trying to do something, get me to react or realize something. I just can't figure it out. I'm wondering if she's even telling the truth. T's don't lie, do they? She's psychanalytically trained.

Any thoughts?

It just doesn't sound like a helpful comment to me. I'd think she would be trying to build up your self esteem. That's just my thoughts Phillipa

I think I'd ask some followup questions because context is *really* important. If that was the sum total of what my therapist said, I think I'd seriously consider whether he was the therapist for me. But when I listened again in context, I might well discover that that wasn't *all* he said.

My T said the exact same thing to me -- you really are very messed-up and, he added, I don't mean that in a negative way, just that you have a lot of work to do.

I wasn't hurt. I was pretty messed-up at the time.

I think you're right. I need to ask her about it. All I can remember is that phrase.

Do therapists ever say things just to provoke?

I think Dinah gave some good advice. I don't know if I'd be able to follow it. Personally, I'd feel hurt and need quite an explanation. Sounds unprofessional.

two cents.
