How do you know when you're ready to leave therapy

Posted by winsome on August 2, 2013, at 10:09:02

I am very attached to my therapist. I asked him this question, "when do you know you are ready to terminate therapy?" He said I would know I didn't need to come any more. I asked, "What is the patient never chooses to be done with therapy?" He said I asked the hardest questions and took awhile to think about this. His answer was something about not becoming too dependent on therapy. Hmm, aren't we all dependent in the therapy relationship? I didn't want to push him further but his answer seems vague. Any opinions on this? Maybe I will never feel ready to be done. Winsome

I don't know about being ready to leave it. Never felt I was, but was not sure of what I was doing.

But more important might be to leave it in such a way that in the future you can look back on the termination with satisfaction.

I thought I was ready to leave therapy and went through this whole good-bye process, but by three months I was desperate to see him. Now I'm cutting back gradually. I see him once a month for half an hour. In the fall, I plan to cut back further to once every six weeks, then to once every two months. It is easier this way. I am no longer so attached that I cry at the thought of him. I like still seeing him, though we have less and less to talk about. I just con't quite imagine a life in which he is not a part.

When you're bored, and start arriving later and later, and think about cancelling because you've got something better to do.
