10 O'Clock News

Posted by Toph on March 8, 2014, at 21:48:24

OK, so I lied about spending more time here after retirement. I dunno, just didn't have the urge. Anyway, an update. They threw a retirement party for me and about 60 people attended including my wife and kids and my 90-year old father. I gave a speech that was positive and appreciative and made me choke up a little like the softie that I am. After a year of my wife harping on me "to have a plan" for my retirement she has been unbelievably patient with me not yet finding a part-time job. It's not like I'm totally holding the couch down, I volunteer at the local nursing home working with the younger head injury residents. And I am slowly getting back into shape at the fitness center. In the midst of this transition, my psychiatrist of 20 years decides to retire. I surprised myself by not getting freaked out and was even his first patient to find a shrink to replace him. This doc is kind of eccentric with a tiny waiting room with his receptionist chatting away in a very folksy way. The doc takes phone calls more than I am used to. Last appointment he bet me $1 over something related to my gout, checked his phone and went to the parking lot to pay me the money after losing the bet. Quite the change from my last fastidious pdoc. I pretty much only see the new guy for meds so I'm content. Sorry for the long note. Hello to everybody. I'm doing okay.

hi!!!

don't worry - there's still time for you to catch up on all your posting :)

glad to hear that things are going well and that you are keeping busy. your p-doc sounds fun. i think p-docs get to forget most of their non p-doc knowledge... except for basic cpr... i think they make them keep up their first aid certificates, ha.

I'm just glad he knows about bipolar disorder Alex. Most of his patients come from a nearby inpatient unit. I realize that he's basically a pharmdoc, but so far I haven't missed the old psychdoc that much. I am also pleased that he seems more tolerant of my ideas about Li levels and dosages.

Hi Toph,

I only see my pdoc for meds though once and awhile she seems to sneak in some therapy, but anyway she has a sense of humor which I badly need in a doc.

I think volunteering counts as part time work, providing you don't need the paycheck.

Most of what I talked with the last pdoc was the stress of my work anyway. After retirement I went through a month of waking up at night with distorted memories of things in my past that I regret or are ashamed of. This has dissipated as in hindsight I slowly accept that I was pretty good at what I did. Its pretty simple to understand that for 30 years I was in part defined by my job. I need something to fill the void. I'll find something. I also became a grandfather since I last posted, so that's been another wonderful change.

Hi, Toph. I think that retirement is agreeing with you! I have a lot of angst going on right now, but I'm working on it. Always good to see your name here.

Hey PC. It's always good to see an old face around here (old as in from the past lol). I have seen some of your domestic issues here and there. Been there done that. You've got plenty going for yourself not to let this define you. If I remember correctly, I met the offending party once in Chicago. Affable but those were different times. Sorry you have to endure this distress.

Toph, so great to hear from you. I was thinking (for myself) about volunteering some time at an animal shelter, perhaps spending time with strays brought in that need to be socialised with humans. I might qualify. I would ask for cats, since I have never known a dog to consider me alpha anything.

Maybe, rather than still generating income, you might look to volunteering at a place that would mean something to you?
