on-line therapy

Posted by mist on October 4, 2000, at 19:47:56

Hi. I'm new to posting on this board.

Has anyone tried on-line therapy? What do you think of it?

I wonder if it's a good idea or not.

Mist,

If I'm going to do therapy (which I am), I want to see my therapist's face when I talk to him/her. I want to know the person up close. I think the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important ones you have and shouldn't be something done as impersonally as over the Internet. If you decide to go ahead with this I'd love to hear how it works out for you.

I hope you are doing well.

Peace,
Greg

Mist, I agree with Greg...the relationship with the therapist is more important than what kind of therapy they offer, and it's really important to me to feel like I'm talking to a real human being, and I need to see their face, body language, etc., so I can see how they're responding to what I'm saying.--Cindy W

On Dr. Bob's home page, there are links to documents that provide guidelines for on-line mental health services, including on-line therapy. You might find it helpful to read them.

Hi, mist
If there's no way to see a therapist you like, on-line is one of the alternatives. But the whole list of reasons to do so are, according to my in-house expert, more rationalization than anything else. We get requests every day (ever since Undoing Depression was published, and also through the website) for doing therapy on-line and he has NEVER done it. Sure he may answer a question or two (without charge) and even talk to someone on the phone...but he encourages the person to find a therapist to go to.
Very occasionally, someone he is already seeing needs to have a session by phone...like when something comes up during traveling, or when the client is too ill to get in for an appointment. But this is talking to someone you already know, so you can more easily interpret what's being said.
And he also uses email for between-session check-ins with some patients who want him to think about some issues for the next appointment.
So that's one therapist's oppinion. I do hope you find what you need.
