I'm wondering how common it is for therapists to offer to call and check in on clients. (I mean "check in" in the most positive, supportive way possible!)

I have heard of it happening. Usually when things are going pretty crappy and they are concerned for the safety of the patient.

My ex-pdoc who was also my therapist used to. Most frequently, he'd call when he knew I was getting close to the end of a scrip, altho sometimes he'd just call if he hadn't heard from me for awhile, and once, when i was in fairly bad shape he called me from a highway phone booth when he was headed out of town for Thanksgiving. I think he was sort of known for going the extra mile to keep in contact with his patients.

Thanks KB, Sourceror, and Mair. My therapist seems like an "extra mile" kinda gal, but I think I may have her worried, too--which worries (and kind of interests) me. Glad to know it's not unheard of! --p
