janejj,
Thank you for your posting of the news about forced confinement in England. I believe that this is a topic that needs to be brought out into the open.
Lou

"A patient would initially be presented with a care plan.

Mental health tribunals would then decide on compulsory treatment after 28 days. The decision would be reviewed after six months and again after a year.

People can challenge decisions. [YEAH, RIGHT]

The Bill applies to people with conditions ranging from anorexia to manic depression and dangerous and severe personality disorders.

well this just goes to show that things look like going from bad to worse..The UK is already backwards in having the most crude DX system based on objective behaviour observation..WHich DOEs not WORK ..

I was kept in a ward for three weeks which I understood was voluntary admission..till i tried to get out..and was threatened with being shipped of to a secure unit by one of the nurses..

When I questioned my case they had held me under the description "holding strange beliefs" ..which turned out to be that I had internal bleeding at the time of my breakdown..and because they would not listen and had taken away my stomach medications...I got crazy...and made a very big scene as to why they would not belive me...

Although having said that..a freind I made in those wards was a palestinian..who would suddenly break out into religous fervor and try to get involved in plans to go and fight ...and this was pre-september 11th..so I guess I can see some good reasons for these moves...

What is however really fragmented is the DX process itself...
a patient is kept under observation in a ward..where no records of symptoms are communicated by the nurses to each other..or their peers..

its not really that Pdocs and Pnurses are not trying in the Uk..its a much bigger problem..the whole structure of procedures ..which is tied into a the way britain operates on a whole..is so convergant and fragmented and prey to overzealous policy..feeding back on its own process..while totally ignoring the progress made in the USA regarding Biopsychiatry ..CBT effects on brain structure...polypharmacy...sensitive psychiatry etc etc...
