> That's probably because you understand it (and his other songs) and I don't! They just make me confuuuuuuuuuuused. :) I did like the sound of them at one point though, but they have a different effect on me now. In general, I've grown less and less fond of lyrics in music and prefer instrumentals.
Aha! That explains it. I won't even listen to a band that has crappy lyrics, but I do like bossa nova, which uses the voice as an instrument, rather than for lyrics.
As for "Bennie and the Jets," it's really just about a glam-rock band and all the kids showing up to hear them. Ain't nothing to understand, really.
What kind of instrumentals do you like? Classical? New Age? Samba?

One thing that really bothers me is going into a store and hearing songs with "crappy lyrics" being piped in. You're forced to listen to it!

That sounds interesting. Don't think I've heard any.

I guess I thought it had some deep, symbolic meaning that I wasn't getting!

Classical can be a little melancholy so generally not. New Age, not really. Samba can be nice. There are some things I've heard on web stations but don't know what category they'd fall under--just that they sounded good to me. I'm not very musically knowledgeable.
This is the end of the thread.
