Lost's back...and ty for post, jodie!!

Posted by lostsailor on February 21, 2003, at 10:24:04

Hi all. I had a bit of a computer meltdown which led to major brain strain. I have been, unable to sleep well--gee, that's new =:)--and not even had my "screen full of friends" near to "hear". It was odd but did have a chance to write a bit, draw and read. I have even experimented with daytime telivision, but found it to be too frightning. HHHmmmm , what was it like before the computer as a typical household item>??????\

Whenever my internet provider is down, I feel like I'm stuck on an island - disconnected from the rest of the world. I've grown used to having the world at my fingertips.

Ain't it freaky with no internet? I used to read more books. Now when I read books, they just seem kind of dead. No surprises. Not like the web at all. My attention span has clearly been shortened by websurfing.

This is strange but I have felt the same as you just mentioned. I used to read ravenously until I started to break and for ever it seemed that short stories and stuff on the net were becoming the wealth of my literary. Actually , though, (is it the lamictal???) I can read again and feel. I read Hemmingway's Farewell to Armsand totally forgoten the end until the last page or two. I was devestated at the end as I was in high school. HHHHMMMMm....was I supposed to give Amazon a plug there???

It's not surprising that going on the net a lot (notice Beardy, I've ALWAYS typed a lot not alot) makes reading difficult. We use a different part of our brain for watching (or reading) something on TV or the computer. It's different than what we use for reading. It's been shown by using PET scans of an active brain.

It's something that we should be training our minds to do. If we only use it in a certain way, other parts get lazy & we lose our ability in those areas. Because I have ADD, I've worked extra hard to train myself to concentrate on lectures or talks. I dare not get lazy about using the computer too much or watching too much TV. I lose my ability to follow & concentrate on printed matter very fast then.

Any time we can use our minds in somewhat diff ways, we should. I've read that things as simple as trying to eat with your left hand (if you're right handed) sometimes, to doing puzzles that you normally wouldn't, to driving a different route hone than your normal one all "exercise" our mind in ways we wouldn't normally.

It's good to use your mind in as many diff ways as you can. It doesn't have to be brain rackingly hard stuff either, just different. People who use their minds like this rarely develop senility or Alzheimer's & can recover much better if they suffer a stroke or anything similar. It's good insurance for when we grow old.

Great!!! I was wondering where you were...

You're welcome for the post!!!

I understand the "sleep" thing. I am now an official insomniac. I just started Adderall a couple of weeks ago, and that is just making the sleep problem worse. It's helping concentration and organization (I haven't lost the keys, remote, or anything like that in a few days :-)....that is good for me. One time, I misplaced the t.v. remote, I looked everywhere. I finally found it in the refrigerator. Don't ask how that happened.

Medication....will I ever find one that doesn't need another to get rid of side effects?

Sorry you had a computer meltdown. Once in a while, I forget (seriously) to pay my cable bill, and get my cable shut off. I lose my access to the internet since it comes through my cable line. I am miserable without the internet!!!! I understand how you must have felt.

Nice to hear from you. Talk to you soon!!!

Jodie
