Noa - spring cleaning continued

Posted by BekkaH on April 17, 2003, at 21:26:21

Hello Noa,

This is a postscript to a thread you began a few weeks ago on house-cleaning. The other day I was in Sam's Club and thought of you. Are any of those warehouse clubs like Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's near you? You can buy huge quantities of paper plates, plastic utensils, etc., at reduced prices so you won't run out until you're ready to deal with dishwashing again. The same items in the regular grocery store were nearly three times as expensive. In addition to the paper and plastic goods, you can buy gigantic packages of disposable aluminum pans for broiling, baking and roasting. That way, the only dishwashing you'd have to do would be the pots. I haven't yet seen a disposable pot. If you find any, let me know, and I just might buy them, too.

Thanks, Bekka!

They do have some of the club type store near here, though not real close. I don't go because they are not in the immediate vicinity, and also because I find them a bit overwhelming.

But I do appreciate the tip--and am honored that you thought of me!

Yes, they really are overwhelming, and I have to overcome tremendous resistance to force myself to go. Some are so big, they could have their own zip code. I go to Sam's about four or five times a year, and I stock up on enough to last me a few months. Although they do have all kinds of food there, including perishables, usually I just stock up on paper goods, pet food, laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Going there does take a lot of energy, but once I go and get it over with, it feels so good to know I have all those things on hand and I don't have to think about them again for another three or four months. Also, when I go to the regular grocery store and see how much more expensive the items are, I'm pleased to know that I've saved significant sums of money at the warehouse.

Hey Bekka- do you need to pay for a membership there like Costco? I guess most people think it's definitely worth it. Do you have kids? Do you think it's worth it if you're a 2 person family? A friend of mine says that Costco has everything...treadmills, electronics...I thought it was just food!!

The only problem i think I might have would be that I would be so kid-in-a-candy-store that I'd get stuff that I didn't really NEED but wanted because it was such a good buy. Had a little trouble at TJ Maxx yesterday: "Well I don't really need any more shoes but they're Steve Madden and they're worth like, well...a lot more!!!"...

Yes, it's true. You can even buy Prada purses at the one near us.

We have a family of three but we still manage to buy many essentials there - vitamins, fake Gator-ade for our 15 year old, Perrier water, gasoline, tissues, canned dog food, packing tape, canned air (oh how I love that stuff).

I agree with the stress-level that someone mentioned about places like Costco (or Sam's). I usually end up feeling like Kara Lynne described in her one post but I usually get over it once I get home and have finally found a place for the thirtieth roll of toilet paper.

Hey Leeran...well dernit, it's worth it just for the fake Gatorade! I kid.
That sounds cool. We don't have that much room now but I'll definitely pursue it when we get a house. This "friend" that I mentioned before (why do I keep saying that? it's as if I'm trying to hide my identity...well this friend of mine has what she thinks might be genital herpes...) said that it's also great for getting pics developed. For digital pics you can use their website and order extras...it's really cheap. I mean, our wedding crook, I mean, photographer charged like $25 just for an extra 8 by 10! Costco charges a few bucks. I think it was a dollar something for a 4 by 5. There's the postage but it's still cheaper. And fast.

I kinda wish you hadn't divulged that...

You seem to be very "potty" oriented today. First the underwear reference above and now this. Hmmmm. You're funny.

re: the thirtieth roll of toilet paper
"You seem to be very "potty" oriented today. First the underwear reference above and now this."

For some reason, juggling around all those rolls of single wrapped toilet paper and deciding which bathroom gets how many rolls can actually be quite daunting for me. That's not to say that I'm not, on any given day, one potty mouthed (and potty oriented) gal.

Re: underwear and its comfort (or lack of comfort) -

A poor choice made at the underwear drawer can leave me feeling out of sorts for the entire day. Case in point, one day I wore a "back of the drawer" bra to a flea market. I bent over to look at something on the ground and the front came completely undone. Now, this may sound like a simple enough problem but I had my hands full and I was some distance from the ladies room. Plus, I hate to backtrack when I might be footsteps away from the next great find.

When I write my book "A Neurotic's Field Guide for an Even More Complicated Life" I will probably devote an entire chapter to undergarments. And toilet paper ;-)

I think I need to leave the house. I may be having phantom PMS and this board is like feeding peanuts to a circus monkey (I am, of course, the monkey who can't turn down any little peanut today).

I need to go out and remind myself what road rage really means.

Hi Kar,
Yes, there is a membership fee, but I think it paid for itself the first or second time I shopped there. It's an annual membership fee. I think it's $35 or $40. Actually, there were several different types of membership, but I picked the least expensive one. Before I joined, several people said it wasn't worth it for a single person, but I decided to join anyway, and I think it is worth it. I don't have much storage space, but I don't care about that. I like having the feeling of security and peace of mind, knowing I have all those items "in stock" for 3-4 months at a time. Shopping is draining of both energy and time, so I like to do it as infrequently as possible. Yes, they have EVERYTHING there. They have office supplies (printer paper and printers!), TV's, videos, fresh fruit, meat, 40-pound bags of kitty litter, gigantic packages of toilet paper and paper towels. You name it, they've got it. I haven't purchased any appliances there. I have gotten printer paper, lots of toiletries, paper goods, cat food, kitty litter, huge containers of laundry detergent, dish detergent, bottled water, soda, etc. A friend of mine bought some Speedo swimsuits there at unheard-of savings, but when I looked at the suits, I didn't like the style. The clothing is sort of hit-or-miss, like an outlet store. Sometimes you'll find terrific clothes, and at other times the clothes are hideous.

The first time I went, I was like the kid in the candy store, but now that the novelty has worn off, I have a wee bit more self control.

Thanks Bekka!

We're moving; I'll have to see what they have up there. Sounds like we really should join.

One of the two times I shopped in a club, I bought 2 pieces of luggage real cheap.
