Emme: chocolate evangelism!

Posted by Medusa on November 2, 2003, at 3:26:08

Emme,

so what's the chocolate whose gospel you're proclaiming?

Lately I've kept a Rausch brand Tobago 75% cocoa chocolate bar in my bag. It's potent - one block hits the chocolate spot. I thought it was a fair trade product, but now that I read the package again I'm not sure.

There are a couple of Ritter brand Bailey's bars from a friend in the cupboard, but I haven't tried them yet. They're only 37% cocoa, so I'm not optimistic. I guess their selling point is the Bailey's, not the chocolate.

Sometimes I like milk chocolate, but I haven't found the ideal one yet.

Do you like chocolates, as in the praline confection things? What kinds? A lot of people go gaga over Godiva, but they're made by machine, with lots of preservatives. They're mostly flashy packaging, a product for people who don't recognize the inferior quality of the contents.

The business coach I saw brought out those Ferrero Rocher pralines. They're heavily advertised by that James Bond actor, and I suspect that the coach was taken in by that. Again, glitzy packaging and great marketing, but disappointing substance. I said no thanks and brought out my own bar, in case I decided I did want real chocolate. He made fun of mine! For other reasons, I'm not going to see him again, but jeesh, making fun of my high-octane chocolate wasn't a good way to go.

Chocolate is such a tasty topic. I like Paul Newman's milk chocolate bars. Rapunzel's plain and hazelnut also fine. I think these candies are totally organic. Then there's something called XXOO Choco Love very creamy and a deep flavor. I miss the old fashion Kit Kat that was made in England, it had a special flavor from Belgium. But since it was bought out by Hershey's the flavor is totally different. Hershey's leaves my mouth dry.

mmmmmh, will have to try these.

who makes these?

It's got only a low percentage of cocoa ...

I don't know about their quality, but once every few years there's just something about Cadbury's Creme Eggs ...

I'll have to keep an eye out for the Tobago 75%. That's about the percentage that I like the best. I mostly go for the dark stuff.

I'm proclaiming the gospel of Dolfin, a Belgian brand. Check them out on the web. It's not so easy to find, but it's total heaven. They've got a wonderful line of both milk and dark chocolate bars with ingredients such as Ear Grey, organge peel, carmelized cocoa beans, pink peppercorns, mint leaves, etc. They've got a 70% and I think there's one higher than that.

Valrhona is very nice. My second favorite. They don't have the elaborate flavors, but their dark is great stuff. I've never tried their milk, but I imagine it would be good.

Scharffen Berger (not sure if I spelled that right) is American made but on par with European brands. I liked it, but you pay through the nose for it even worse than the other brands. So I don't buy it, but it's worth giving it a shot to see what you think.

Among the easier to find stuff, I like the Paul Newman's orange flavored dark chocolate. And I do like Andes mints.

Someone else was telling me that they liked Choco Love. I haven't tried it yet.

You know what's great? Chocolate covered cranberries.

Sheesh, I'm such a chocoholic. Okay, I'll be quiet now.

Long live chocolate! :) :)

what is funny about Cadbury is they used to be from England too. I used to love the flavor but guess who own's them now...yes, that ever mouth drying Hersheys.

Aha! That explains why I don't like them.
