Why is it so hard to find a phychiatrist?

Posted by Wildflower on November 12, 2003, at 14:02:18

OK, I've gotten to the point that I really need to talk to someone about things that are going on right now. My general practioner had previously prescribed some ADs but told me that eventually I would need to find a specialist. Not in a million years would I think this would be so freaking hard!

I have a pre-approved list from my insurance which is not helping. The first two names on the list (the closest to where I live) are no longer at that location. The next two I called are not accepting new patients. This now brings me to someone who is not too close to where I'm at. This person doesn't have any appointments until mid-December.

What am I supposed to do? Is it always this hard to get an appointment with a phychiatrist? Any advice?

I know people who go out of state for medical
treatment, so a long drive across town, if that is your only oprion, is reasonable. If you really want to get better.

The drive doesn't bother me as much as not being able to get in for four weeks.

I feel the same way. Haven't found one that I felt was a real person or cared yet.
Did have a good psychologist though.
Now I go to one I'm not crazy over so I can get my perscription.

4 weeks is a normal wait, this is the unfortunate
reality.

Unfortunately the majority of shrinks that are part of an HMO are booked far in advance. You can try to find an independent psychiatrist (one who doesn't accept insurance), they will take you right away if it's urgent. I've gone that route while I waited to see an insurance approved shrink, and it was well worth it.
best of luck- judy
