Wrapping gifts

Posted by Poet on December 20, 2003, at 12:26:40

I have a pile of presents on the table to be wrapped before a party tonight. The cats are chewing on the paper and making off with bows, I have to decide to just use ragged paper with fur stuck to the tape or just give up and shove them in plastic grocery or garbage bags.

With one exception, the people the gifts are for don't know that I'm a psychological mess and won't get why I'm just not into making things all pretty and merry and bright. On the other hand they would understand cat fur on the gifts.

Force myself to wrap or not?

poet -

i have decided that wrapping paper is a waste of resources and money. i cannot count the number of times relatives have received presents wrapped in newspapers and duct tape, or plastic grocery bags.

so you can try the faux-environmental stance.

or, since you have the paper already, instead of wrapping properly try making a bundle out of the present (where you gather all the paper at the top). this covers ragged paper nicely. affix an extra bow to the chew-holes.

then again everybody knows i'm nuts so it's ok if i wrap presents like a mental patient, they tend to find it charming :p

I vote for wrapping - cat fur and all. I'm sure it won't look as bad as you think. Anyway, people who care about a perfectly wrapped present have the worst psychological problems.

I never wrap very neatly. They're only gonna tear it off anyway, right? Don't sweat it. The cat fur will give it a personal touch. :)

At an office grab bag, I wrapped my contribution that morning in like 2 minutes and it looked so messy that no one wanted it and it was left as the very last gift. The guy who had to take it was absolutely delighted - it was a small halogen desk lamp.

Wrapped Up

I did it, I covered rips with gift tags and slightly bitten bows. One is in a grocery bag, with a nice green twist tie. The bag has a wreath on it, so it's sort of festive.

Anyone who would comment on how they look is not worthy of the gift inside. I have really nice stuff, some of which I would gladly keep.

The cats and I thank you for your help.

I hate the commercial wrapping paper and bows anyway.

How bout these alternatives...
- newspaper and yarn
- brown paper bags and kitchen twine
- aluminum foil wrapping with saran wrap bows (gives a space-age look)
