So, did you say you like to watch birds? I only watch them as they poop on my car after I just finished washing it. Blasted creatures... My dogs named after the place where they filmed "The Birds." Does that count for something? And a bird flew in my car once. And my boyfriend's parents have large windows that birds fly into. But, they have bird feeders and watch birds often. Is it fun? Do you enjoy it? Why? Why not watch dogs instead? I watch my dog a lot and wonder what he's thinking. I tease him aobut failing mathematics, he's no rocket scientist you know. Do you think that dogs think about things? Like getting jobs? I'm always telling my dog to get a job, but he doesn't have a thumb. What kind of job could he get? My dog watches birds too! Maybe you could come over sometime and you and my dog could watch birds together... Do you think that you are similar to my dog, since you both enjoy watching birds? Would you eat one if you caught it? My dog would! I enjoy watching people. They're strange creatures.. I wonder where they're going, what they're doing. Do you wonder that about birds? I just don't understand.... Are you still out there, or did you get lost watching the birds?

In reply to Jai, how are the birds?, posted by Karen_kay on February 9, 2004, at 14:47:12
My T has a birdfeeder that sits in her window in her office - she is a true birdlover, and sometimes I get so caught up in watching the chickadees and cardinals and purple finches and gold finches and doves, and so on...she also has a thistle feeder (for the finches, primarily) and a hummingbird feeder. I love the female cardinal, especially in the spring. She's beautiful up close.
I told my T that forever, whenever I was watching the birds, I would now think of her. And she responded that she thought that was a nice thing to connect with her.
Pretty pretty birdies....

What a delightful post. You girls are so sweet & fun. I just got home after a long day at my job and I sure do like to see this post. Yes, yes I love birds. Big and small. I like them so much I eat them too. I like chicken, turkey, cornish hens and I just had duck for the first time at a Thai resturant. So tasty and good for you too.
We have thistle feeders as well. When the sun is shining on their little bodies...sometimes it takes my breath away. They are turning colors now....spring is not far away. The ducks are doing their mating dances on the river. The eagle is looking for a nest site. I love the beginning of spring. I wake up before the dawn and feel my body's excitement for the new season. This year winter has been brutal. So Karen and Penny thank you for brightening my day.

I like dogs a lot! But, I don't think I would eat them. Often, my boyfriend and I used to talk when we were very low on money... And we would discuss our next meal. He would say, "Well Bodega, looks like we may have to eat doggie for dinner!" Bodega didn't like that answer. Nor did I! I told my boyfriend that I would rather eat my own arm than my lovely doggie. Luckily we did have ramen in the cabinet.
As I drive past a river in town, there are often geese close to the road. Maybe I'll catch one and mail it to you in an envelope? Will I need one stamp or two, do you suppose? Perhaps three if it is well fed.... Should I give it a cigarette to calm it down before mailing it off?
In the summertime, my dog runs from window to window chasing various creatures around the yard. I can only imagine what he would do if he caught one. He caught a squirrel once, but I assume it was rather sick, if he caught it. He also caught a horse once. He had to wear a cast for a few weeks. He still chases horses though. Maybe my dog isn't as smart as I once thought. Maybe he is....
At least when I chase horses, I jump on top of them. Maybe that's what he was attempting to do? What do you think? Could you imagine a dog riding atop a horse?
Sometimes I set my niece on top of my dog and pretend like he's a horse. He doesn't like that though. What would a dog look like with wings? If a dog had wings could he fly, do you think? Could you imagine having to clean dog poop off your car? That would suck!!! Imagine if horses could fly! That would be even worse than dog poop! And I don't even want to discuss dinosaurs!
Do you think dogs ever get depressed? Or sad? Or lonely? I hope not... what about birds?

He would look like my dog, Oscar, looked when he was chasing my horse and grabbed her tail in his mouth.......she ran and he held on!!!!! He was hitting the ground about every 10 feet as she circled the pasture..........needless to say he didn't do that again. I don't think he liked flying very much!

Oh - dogs definitely can get depressed, sad, AND lonely. When I first got Puddin', I was able to go home every day at lunch, so I could take her out and spend time with her while I ate. But it soon became obvious that she wasn't happy being alone for so long at a time, so I adopted Penny to keep her company, which has worked out well.
And I don't know about song birds or wild birds getting depressed, but certain domesticated birds (particularly the large ones that live for years and years) get very attached to their primary owner and can pine away for them if separated. I was fascinated at the thought of owning one of those $1500 parrots, as if I had that much money!, but when I read about how moody they can be and how insecure and so on, I decided that I'm moody enough for one household, so I'd better stick with my dogs.
