Did I mention I got two baby parakeets for my birthday? Hehehe, so cute- one's already whistling with me a little :)

Hi,

Hi Ms. Lala,

I'm alone (finally, hooray) and thought I'd sneak a post and see what happens. I am so brave.

Hope your birthday was a happy one, I totally forgot to send you a post. Bad, bad me.

I don't have any pet birds (too many cats) but there's a cute little guy who sleeps above my garage light to keep warm. I talk to him/her every night and make sure the bird feeder is full.
I hope there's a nest and some babies come spring.

I feel like a spy during the French resistance. I keep looking around, now my coworkers will think I'm paranoid. Am I paranoid? Hmm...

au revoir

La La La La,

I have so much fun with your name I hope you don't mind....I have a beautiful boy parakeet named Skyler and he is an absolute joy! He talks and has quite an extensive vocabulary. He was hand fed and I have had him since he was 5 weeks old. He is now little over 2 years old! He says things like: "Mommy kiss the bird" "Don't bite your mommy's nose" "Don't eat the bird" "What are you doing?" "Mommy birdy boy" "Love you" "Doody doody doody" "You smell like a bird" or sometimes "you smell like your mommy's bird" He also does the wolf whistle and the come here whistle. I also have 2 cats and they behave themselves when I have him out..I think they are confused because to them "It looks like a bird, flies like a bird, smells like a bird..but damn it talks! Must not be a bird...."
I have a picture of him looking at himself in a mirror if you would like to see him...

It's ok- I like having fun with your name too- Tootitootitoots :) hehe Fun names rock.

I definitely want to see the picture!

I have two- male and female (I would LOVE babies!) The girl is "Yella" and the boy is "Blue" I know I know, not very original, but I was trying to have names that they could say easily. Blue is starting to get the hang of the wolf whistle- it's so cute. Any tips on teaching them to talk?

I'm so excited I have a bird-lover friend now!! I'll take pictures tonight and post them so you can see :)

My cats are still amazed by the birds. I have the cage above my desk. My little girl kitty (Trot) lays spread eagle on the desk chair and stares up at them. Wain, my big fat black cat (boy), meows at them, like he's either trying to communicate with them or he's saying "What the heck are you doing here??"

I hope my cats learn. I haven't let the birds fly free yet- any tips on making one room bird safe? My plan is to get them use to maybe the bathroom- where I can shut the door and keep the cats out- and the bathroom is nice abnd warm....

Yeah Toots- we can share our corny bird-love together- you made my day :D

> REPETITION IS IMPORTANT. I JUST BASICALLY
TALKED TO SKY-BUTT WHENEVER I WALKED BY HIS CAGE OR WHEN I WOULD TAKE HIM OUT AND HAVE HIM ON MY FINGER. BOY BIRDS GENERALLY ARE KNOWN MORE FOR TALKING THAN GIRLS BUT BOTH ARE ABLE. SKY JUST PICKED STUFF UP FROM AN EARLY AGE ON HIS OWN.

No, not the bathroom!
ie not a room with a mirror(unless you can cover itup). The birds will try to fly into the mirror.

Birds feel safe high up so will tend to find somewhere to perch high up in the room, make sure that somewhere, is somewhere that YOU can get to.
Otherwise we will be hearing hilarious stories ofyou chasing birds around the room with you falling over chairs and slipping on rugs and finally laying exhausted on the floor while your birds sit out of reach with that special smile on their face.........

Well I guess you can tell I've had parrots huh?
I've had lots ofdifferent birds over my life. Currently have twoLovebirds; Buddy and Dufus.
Dufus is daughter of Buddy(both females). Buddy's partner escaped a couple ofyears ago. They had several setsofbabies which was cute.

So now we have three parrot friends :)

good morning. aussie, my parakeet Skyler has never made the "mistake" of flying into a mirror or a window. Yes he is drawn to them because he wants to "talk" to the other birdy but he "looks" for a perch on which to land in front of it. He used to go to the mirror on our bathroom door and somehow hang on to the bottom of it...right now he is on my keyboard trying to "help" me type my post! :)I will post a pic of him on my yahoo profile.

We have a whole wall of mirror in the bathroom- good advice Aussie! Haha thanks!

I'm still scared to let them out.. I'm afraid I won't be able to get them back in... hehe

Dufus- haha, love the name. Do Lovebirds talk?

What a pretty bird! He's lovely - but I didn't know parakeets could talk!

How old do they typically get? And how difficult are they to care for? I've pondered getting a bird, but then did some reading and discovered that I wasn't sure I was willing to take on that responsibility! But, then again, the website I was looking at might have been a bit extremist - I have my dogs and an african dwarf frog, and to read some things about caring for dogs, you'd think it was difficult - but it's not.

So, I'm asking - how hard is it to care properly for Skyler?

Thanks, Toots!

P

Penny, I believe they can live anywhere from 10-18 years if you take really good care of them and they do not meet with misfortune. Bubba (my nickname for him cause I call him Buh-bird all the time)needs to have his water checked and changed often because "poop happens" when he is playing on top of his cage. On the average I clean his cage bottom every 2 weeks so he is not tromping thru previously mentioned poop and seed hulls.
He needs to be kept out of drafts...they don't have a prob with cold really, it's drafts, so I have his "house" away from windows. I feed him parakeet seed as his mainstay but he needs fresh greens and other veggies from time to time...he LOVES kale.
He needs lots of interaction with me when I am home as I am the "Mommy bird". That is how he learned to talk; from day one I have talked to him using short phrases and on a constant and consistent basis. He is still learning new ones! He has mirrors all over his cage so he can talk to "another bird" when I am not there and I leave the TV on for him all day so he has voices to keep him company too.
His favorite toy in life is those little plastic cage balls with the bell inside. He plays soccer with them on the floor and catch with me when he is in the window in the kitchen; it's amazing what this little guy does.
I must always keep vigilance with him around the kitties although they don't always pay any attention to him. And I have to make sure I don't walk outside with him on my shoulder. He loves to ride on me and since I am so used to him just flying onto me at any given time it is a danger.
To say he is a joy doesn't cover it!
Oh and another wonderful thing about parakeets is that their poop is small and very easily dealt with. On that lovely note I will sign off..

Hugs,
Toots
