Going back to work ... help

Posted by profiles on March 31, 2004, at 15:51:16

Does anybody know about books, webpages, tips, advice, etc for people with mental illness returning to the workplace?
I am going back to work and school after a couple of months recovering from a breakdown, severe depression/suicide attempt and I am having a very hard time with stress (which is triggering a little bit of anxiety) and my time management skills are down the drain :(((((

I so understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately, I don't know of anything to help out. Sorry....

Pro, sit quietly in a safe place (eyes open or closed doesn't seem to matter). Identify the [noun] (people, place, thing, idea) that you are answering to. Notice the conflict. Study the conflict. Study it like a chess board.

Then, when the picture is clear in your mind's eye, (remember you are sitting quietly in a safe place), in your mind's eye, go up to that [noun] and start ordering it around. Tell it what to do and to stop being a part of the problem in your conflicted feelings and to become part of the solution. When you see the reaction of that [noun], your specific anxiety about that specific [noun] will be extinguished much to your surprise and delight.

I've seen this work literally 100's of times while studying under David Peck. After you do this a few times with different [nouns], life becomes your problems not the [nouns] causing you to feel conflicted. Then you can deal your problems as only you can do.

The first time I saw this, my eyes bugged out (and I still have hyperopia!....lol). I can't be there to ensure it works smoothly. But don't worry, it does work.

PS: the [nouns] thing is my lazy-not-wanting-to-type at work with my humor......
