Good bands...love Nirvana, Soundgarden...also love Tool, Deftones (great dark music to go down and down too..especially at maximum levels.) Also like Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails...the new Sara Mclachlan disk is excellent..and Coldplay is sweet. I also like Ministry (hardcore industrial), Sepultura (South American Death Metal), Slipknot (really f*cked up sh*t!..more 'happy' music..:-)

It's nice that at 34, I listen to music 100 times heavier and louder than people half my age. I just grew up with very hard rock, from Black Sabbath to Zepplin to Rush. Knowing how to play is theraputic for me too..as I first learn't drums, then bass. I love to pound the sh*t outta my instruments...good therapy. :-) I'd suggest anyone take up an instrument..it brings confidence (learning how to play *good*) and creativity.

Jay

just to be different, i am going to give a few anecdotes about bands / albums / songs and what they mean to me:

* alice in chains - dirt. when my mother found this album she asked me if i was suicidal and threatened to take me to a shrink. i wasn't suicidal at the time. ironically enough, some years later when i was suicidal, i put that album on.

* tragically hip - fully completely. i heard this album in 1993. we used to play it at pool parties with my school friends. it was always the summer time rock out chill out party music, and it is still my very favourite album to this day.

* the cure - oh the cure. my first serious boyfriend was a goth (or a wannabe) and he introduced me to the cure. and how i love the cure. there was charlotte sometimes "sometimes i dream/while the other people dance" and from the edge to the deep green sea and so many others ... when i broke up with my first serious boyfriend i believe i spent that summer getting high, listening to the cure, playing computer games, and crying. robert smith knew my pain. he understood. he still does understand. i don't know if i can listen to pictures of you or prayers for rain without crying.

* depeche mode - policy of truth. "you had something to hide/should have hidden it shouldn't you/and now you're not satisfied/with what you're being put through". i listened to this song over and over when my dear old friend called me, desperate for advice, because he had cheated on his girlfriend. i encouraged him to not tell her or to lie. he didn't listen. then i had to listen to the nuclear fallout. and i cursed him for not taking my advice while listening to policy of truth.

and there are so many more little stories ...

i ascribe songs to people or to periods of my life. and when i listen to those songs, i can close my eyes and picture how i felt and throw myself back in time. sometimes i find new songs and make new meanings (for example, the cure's doing the unstuck is so very liberating and i have been doing the unstuck for a while now i think)

but i can't listen to music at work, because i get too absorbed in the tunes. (if i do listen to music at work, it is jazz (of the mingus/mobley/coltrane variety) or trance (goa trance (for example, infected mushroom) is my favourite of that kind of variety)

the funny thing is that i have been spending my time and money buying jazz and world music cd's over the last two years. i am totally out of touch with popular music and i am totally ok with that.

Hearing Willie Nelson sing "Blue eyes Crying in the Rain" takes me back to my FIRST divorce"...my stomach actually reacts to that melody.....that album was the rage then.......James Taylor singing " Mexico" also.....Leon Russell "Lady Blue".......causes me to "see" the little apartment that I moved to...so scared and lonely...family disowned me...thought it was better to live with an alcoholic than without~~~~Ryan Adams~~"Touch, Feel & Lose" sick with Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever....72 hr headaches, chills..on isolated ranch with my daughter..wolves howling at night...isn't it something how a melody or a fragrance can instantly transport us to another place, time, person, etc.? The entire 13 years that I was married to my first husband I was not "encouraged" to listen to any music other than country....so at the age of 31, I "discovered" Joe Cocker, Leon, J.J. Cale, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and others....(Can you imagine my feelings when I went to my first Dylan concert...the kohl, the electric guitar, the joy!!)I was FREE to listen to whatever I wanted. Music played a huge part of my meeting second husband and marrying him....interesting side note...Willie didn't like first one but approved of second one....that was one of the reasons that I went to work for him. He rocked!!!! (I'm not with second now....he didn't rock...we just thought that he did)

oh, it's music to my ears.

the cure, octo. you're bringing up old memories, best left unmentioned. did you see they recently released a b-side compilation? awwwww.... i used to listen to a letter to elise on repeat over and over again. and boys don't cry. plastic passion. f-i-r-e i-n c-a-i-r-o.

alice in chains, i prefer grind more though. what's that say about me, i wonder? i'll think about that for a while.

i've been listening to ryan adams alot (nice touch fayeroe [did i spell it right?]) i think gold's my favorite, but i have yet to get his first album. my sister (my soul mate) found his album laying out one day and shrieked "oh my god! you listen to brian adams?" i tried to explain they are different people, but she didn't understand. finally, i led her to believe they are one in the same. perhaps i should pick up a brian adam's album? maybe it's a sign? maybe not.

i've also been listening to jack johnson again. something about brushfire fairytales is getting to me lately. and i've been picking up dave matthews again for some reason. i get into these moods, where i'll neglect an artist, then for some reason pick them up again. dave's been one of those recently.

tori and bjork: they're always worth listening to. tori sings only to me, i swear. she told me so herself.

jj cale: that's right folks. "coincidence or not, the phrase 'laid back' crept into common use right around the time of jj cale's first album." hmmm. [and it makes me mad that eric clapton rips off his songs and no one notices. hmph.]

widespread panic, phish, micheal jackson, g love, and ween: always good to listen to. (and of course primus)

about ween: how could you not love ween? honestly, i absolutely love chocolate and cheese. nothing's better than music that just makes you think about well, nothing. and sometimes something as well. ween's great.

oh girl~~~~~j.j. cale runs in my bloodstream......i photographed him for ten years running. he's very, very shy and really laid back. a friend took someone to see him and the "someone" asked my friend why j.j. cale was doing eric clapton songs????? if i could play guitar, it would be like him! fayeroe was spelled correctly.....fayeroe is my half airedale and half boxer girl....faye is for the past president of planned parenthood and roe is for roe vs. wade....i be an activist heavy metal style! ryan adams just makes me weep...i love him. i like the cure...some of the others you mentioned, i'm not familiar with. my oldest daughter is a photographer also and specializes in punk bands. she will know all the heavy, punk and alternative that i don't know. i used to go out to the wild life refuge and play j.j. cale and smoke~~~and drink red wine with my girl friend. those were the days....music is what keeps me upright and when i'm down, it is my best friend.

will you marry me? (and you must know that i don't ask often :)

music is wonderful in that it can help put words to your emotions when you can't. or at least bring those feelings out. and let you (and i'm only speaking for myself of course) know that you aren't the only one who feels "this way" or that way.

i think one of the greatest show i went to was a willie nelson show. a lady was a volunteer at the venue and i was in line to buy my ticket and she gave me her extra one. she picked me, out of all of those people. i was touched.

so, you are a photog, eh? i'm a tcom major. hmmm. perhaps we could create some sort of business together someday? you could do the photos for my documentaries? :) of course, i have control issues so i'd have to be the boss.

i really like your name. my doggie is named bodega, after bodega bay in cali. he's a siberian husky, red and white.

nice talking to you, look forward to it in the future..

oh karen_kay
i almost forgot about bjork! (hangs head in shame). how could i forget her? she is on my list of two artists that i would love to go see live (the other is orbital). oh for the love of cheap airfare to europe ... i loved homogenic and post ... followed by debut ...

and i loved tori though i don't listen to her so much now ... oh for the love of leather and winter and choirgirl ... i saw her live twice, once i got tickets from some guy who got stood up by his girlfriend for $10, and the other time i paid full price but she played the instrument that's not quite a piano and not quite an organ (harpsichord) ... oh how my mind is like a sieve

that is an unfortunate name coincidence about that ryan adams fellow

and i did not know about the cure b-sides album but i think i have already cried my river of tears and i need something different to buy ...

(oh and for the 10th anniversary of kurt cobain's death, and for other reasons, my nirvana albums are on heavy rotation)

now, octo's a writer, am i correct? hmmm.. press releases perhaps? how's this for networking?

about name-dropping: suits me just fine. i only wish i had names to drop :( what about karen kay??? now, that's quite a name indeed!

i'm impressed fayeroe, keep it coming. also, you never did respond to my proposal. i dislike rejection, you know.

i think homogenic is my favorite bjork album. debut and post are very close seconds though, very close. it's tough, but something about homogenic is a bit more possibly "mature" in her sound? maybe, maybe not. i absolutely love the way bjork dresses. she's so adorable. that's the word. have you seen dancer in the dark? it's wonderful, though sad.

tori: i saw her when someone sent me a free ticket. i didn't have to go with him or anything. it was my sister's exboyfriend and he gave me a ticket. i didn't stay for alanis morriset (i don't even care if i spelled her name right) and it made me sad that tori opened for her when it should have been the other way around.

i've not listened to nirvana in quite a while. don't even have any cd's any longer. like books, i tend to give cd's away. i feel that if i don't listen to them enough, i have to share them. and nirvana was one that i didn't listen to enough. i passed it along. that then puts me in the position to rebuy albums as well as books. it happens rather frequently.

karen_kay - we went to see her on the same tour!!! that was my 10 dollar ticket. and i also ditched alanis morissette. that's incredible! that was for venus (purple album) ...

i am a writer but i've written very few press releases. but it's easy to write a press release. good headline. 5 w's in the first paragraph. then some blather. keep it to a page. sassy!

i saw dancer in the dark and you're right it was a wonderful movie. i cried and cried. i also loved bjork that time she went to the oscars and she wore the swan outfit (2001). all my boyfriend (at the time)'s friends laughed at her and poked fun, and i almost wanted to cry then too. i was transfixed, she looked beautiful, carried the outfit well, and sang beautifully. a heartbreaker!

Something ain't right
I'm gonna get myself I'm gonna get myself
gonna get myself connected
I ain't gonna go blind
to the light which is reflected
I see thru you - I see thru you
I see thru you - I see thru you
ya dirty tricks - ya make me sick
I see thru you - I see thru you
I'm gonna do it again I'm gonna do it again ah ah
I'm gonna do it again gonna do it again
cause somethin ain't right - gonna do it again
gotta do right
c'mon

Chorus
if you make sure you're connected
the writing's on the wall

stumble you might fall - stumble you might fall

The moon rocks....dig this tidbit

Full Pink Moon - April This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
