Racer, I tried that experiment

Posted by Dinah on April 26, 2004, at 19:45:45

With using computer photo software to flip half my face so that I had two left sides and two right sides. My husband was interested, so I did him too.

The results were enlightening, and funny. Both of us looked better with two right sides than with two left sides. :) My husband looked really different from one side to the other. I looked a bit different.

But it was fun, and I thank you for mentioning it. :)

Oh, incidentally. The biggest difference for me is my ears. My left ear not only sticks out more than my right, but is also noticeably higher on my head. lol.

Hey, Dinah! One of my ears is higher than the other as well. So much so that I need the eye doctor to spend extra time adjusting my glasses so they aren't crooked on my face :).

I tried it too. I did look more upset with my left sides and better with my right. Have to remember that when posing for pics!

That was it exactly! My husband's was really obvious. I wonder how many people that's true for, and if there have been any studies done if there is a consistent pattern.

And why on earth it could be...

There is a consistent pattern...

I just don't remember what it is, or where I first read about it. I came across this about 1980, so my memory lapse is probably not too surprising! I do remember that one side is usually more 'upset' and the article I read had an explanation, but all I remember is that that's the side that isn't for public consumption if you will. It's what's really going on inside you.

Glad you were intrigued by it. I was, but that was before the days of PCs everywhere, so I used my passport photo and covered half with a sheet of paper. It was still effective.

A wooden nickle for anyone who tries it with Bush and Kerry and posts the results!

I heard on the radio that when women ovulate they become more estheticly appealing, including their face becoming more symmetrical. They said it happened in the animal world too. I don't know what the source was, but I thought it was interesting.

That *is* interesting. I'll have to try it again at that time, and see if my results are different. :)

The left/right is interesting. The left side is controlled by the right side of the brain and vice versa, right? You'd sort of think that if there is a difference, the left side would reveal more of your feelings.

Again, my magpie brain is stuffed so full of miscellaneous stuff, but that sounds familiar -- and it might be the explanation I couldn't remember from 23 years ago when I first came across this. It makes sense to me that the left half of your face, which is the less appealing half for most people, is the one that shows your unconscious face, and the right half is showing what you consciously want the world to see. That makes sense to me, but it ain't necessarily so...

Again, though, I'm glad that you've all found it interesting enough to try.

Where is this experiment program? Is it online?

I have no idea where I came across it, but it was 20+ years ago, so no help there. It's simple enough, though: cover one side of a picture of your face, and then the other. If you have an imaging program on your computer, you can use that to flip the side you're looking at and make a symmetrical image of your face. The idea is that each side of your face shows something different. On mine, when I did it so long ago, one side showed an open, friendly, smiling face. The other showed a suspicious, frightened face. Something like that is pretty common, as I recall. I think it was left side controlled by your emotional right brain, right side controlled by your conscious left brain. The best I can remember is that one side -- probably the right side of your face -- shows what you want to show, what you're conscious of; the other side shows what's really going on inside you, on an unconscious level.

I don't know if it's really meaningful, but it is an interesting experience. After all this time, I still remember the shock I got when I saw that scared little half-face looking back at me. That's what I felt, but didn't know that it ever showed. The other side was the clown that I tried so hard to show everyone, what I thought everyone saw in me. It was certainly a little bit of an education...
