bluegrass, anyone?

Posted by fayeroe on April 17, 2004, at 12:29:05

I've always been a very "rock" oriented music slut and then I found "alternative" and went wild...then I discovered contemporary bluegrass,
The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Marley's Ghost and others and I love it! When I was a small girl, my brother-in-law and some other musicians would play at our house on Friday nights...it was bluegrass but more traditional....I have a bumper sticker that say "My Grass is Blue" and you can't imagine how many people think it is about POT!! I check them out and if I think it will blow them away....I say it is a new type of weed that is blue!!! They always want to know where to get it. Anyway, this rant about music just had to come out of my joyous soul today. My granddaughter and I are going across the street to a powwow! The anticipation of that must have started this thread of thought.....have a beautiful week-end, everyone!!!

AND there is a group who covers only AC/DC songs and you would love it~I never would have believed that those songs could be done by bluegrass musicians! You are the only person that I've known that has heard those "alternative" treatments by BG folks.

I've never been to Seattle and now you've got me really wishing I could go~ I am most definitely a music slut.

A kindred soul........now you've got me going. I just remembered this group that turned the tables..remember the Amazing Rythmn Aces? The Burns brothers were in the group and they put out a CD that was the wildest rock music I've ever heard. They did that song "Hold On, I'm Coming" that I believe Sam the Sham did?? Anyway, you got my brain going really early today!!!! The Burns Brothers are unbelievable musicians...I saw them at OU. They opened for Willie and that was when I worked for him. He and my then husband smoked a little "reefer" on the bus
before the show. (just a tidbit of useless "remember when" info)(AND I much prefer "reefer" to pot, weed, etc. sounds so retro, retro)

Ahhhh.... memories + inspiration is a wonderful rush, isn't it!?

i'm fairly new to bluegrass, so i don't go as far back as you do with it. But i can relate to your energy! (i can feel it coming through the computer screen) i'm going to have to show your post to my close friends who got ME enjoying bluegrass a few years ago. i play hammer'dulcimer (traditional celtic), so it wasn't far to leap... inevitable, i guess. i fell in love with Yonder Mtn String Band when they were opening for the String Cheese Incident about 4 years ago, then went to Oregon's JamGrass festival, then the NW String Summit, and now i wouldn't miss one for the world.

My 2 friends who play in the Symphony Orchestra are fond of daring anyone to listen and not smile...
Last year i found out that Heaven is 7 fiddles onstage played by 7 master fiddlers next to the lake as the sun sets... oh! and the mandolins! *sigh*
i still remember asking, "Bluegrass? Isn't that Hillbillys on an old washtub music?" *LOL* -->GASP was i wrong!

The String Summit i'm going to in June
will include Del McCoury Band & a bunch of others... what we've learned from past experience is that you never know who ELSE will show up, the past events have been just unbelievably awesome with bluegrass great & famous who "just show up" for the sheer delight of it and jam with the various bands...

Here's the website if you're curious:
http://www.stringsummit.com/

The JamGrass Festival travels across the US... have you been to one?

Still a 'newbie' ~sortof~ ;)

Are you in Seattle?
Going to the NorthWest String Summit?

Your post gives me an idea that it would be great fun to have a couple of those covers played at the festivals. i'd LOVE to hear "Paint It Black".
Maybe at the JamGrass if it comes through again?

Oh, my~~~~~I am transported back to Santa Fe, front row, middle, The Nashville Bluegrass Band singing "Blue Train"...they play a lot of songs that Gillian Welch writes. Her parents did the music for The Carol Burnett Show!! AHHH, mandolins and twin fiddles. Mac Wiseman, in the rain, at McAlester, Oklahoma, twin fiddles, and he had his guitar "perched" upon his fat tummy and he was pickin and grinnin and I thought I would die!!! I didn't even feel that rain! And I was in lust for Peter Rowan..still could be..."All Alone" by TNBB is a symphony in harmony. UNbelievable! I live in Oklahoma. I've seen Del McCoury here. Alan O'Bryant says you can't listen to banjo and be sad. Steve Martin has a comedy album out where he says Nixon would have done so much better if he had traveled through the country, getting off the train with a banjo, playing "Foggy Mountain Breakdown".....incidentally Steve Martin plays a very mean banjo!!!
AND the best for last! I play dulcimer!!!!! Bought one and taught myself. LOVE IT!!!!

Oh yes!!!!!Sam Bush is great! I second your dare! The first time I saw Marley's Ghost the band got so tickled at me that they were laughing while trying to sing. I was bouncing in my seat! But being in Santa Fe anything was acceptable!! If you ever get a chance to see Marley's Ghost, please do.
