a children's song

Posted by deirdrehbrt on June 14, 2004, at 0:35:02

This is a song in a piano book that I came across a while ago:

When You Grow Up.

When you grow up, what would you like to be?
A mother or a father with a fine family?
You could fly to the moon,
or perhaps to a star,
Or simply be loved for whatever you are.

When you grow up, what would you like to do?
Have all the things good fortune brings when wishes come true?
You could win world-wide fame
or perhaps be a star,
Or simply be loved for whatever you are.

Wouldn't it be nice if our parents could have said these things and meant it? Wouldn't that be a wonderful memory from childhood?

I hope my kids can remember this. I hope that they feel the freedom to do exactly what they want. I hope that they don't feel constrained by narrow minded ways of others.

I know that for me, these words were not true, but as was pointed out in the movies "second hand lions", sometimes you have to believe in things, not because they are true, but because they are right.

thanks for sharing this, Dee (nm)
