Internists

Do people really talk to their internists? About stuff other than blood tests and allergies?

I like my internist because she doesn't *seem* like she's rushing me. But I know she sees tons and tons of patients, and doesn't really have much time. I think it's just a matter of her style and pacing that makes her seem like I don't have to spit out my symptoms at an auctioneer pace. I don't think I'd ever think of mentioning depression or anxiety. ?

i talk to mine...in fact that is who prescribed my first AD.....my internist knows more about me than any other doctor that i might see. i think that he is more insightful and caring than some others i've gone to. he sees my daughters and told me one day that he sees himself as their uncle. a very nice man.....

My internist is also a "family" doctor. He was the first to diagnose my depression - after I had been hounding him for 6 months to relieve my back pain. He prescribed my first antidepressant (though when I first saw my psychiatrist his response was "Why did he start you on that one??"). Sometimes he is a bit simplistic ("You would feel better if you told some jokes"). But he does care, and he gives me the time that I need. He came in early to see me on the day that I finally admitted that I was depressed - he didn't have any appointments available, so he created one for me. I don't go into great detail with him and I think he's really glad I see a therapist and pdoc. He has been depressed himself and saw my pdoc for medication (this was part of his "There is no shame in being depressed" lecture). He looks concerned when I'm not doing well, and comments when I'm doing better. I can't imagine not talking about such an important part of my health with him. He also provided notes to get me out of work when I didn't want the notes signed by a therapist or pdoc.

OK. I feel kind of silly here, but what exactly does one see an internist for. I don't have one. Should I? Am I missing out on something great.

Thanks,

Indie

Hi Indie,

An internist is a doctor that only treats adults, they're sometimes called doctors of internal medicine, too. Anyway, they don't see kids like family medicine docs do.

I've never gone to one, a family med doc used to prescribe my ADs until I got beyond her, so I'm in the pdoc med world now.

I think the benefit of informing your internist (or do you have a family GP that you rely on?) is that they have the overall picture of your health. I see my Pdoc for "mind meds" but my other doc manages my high blood pressure, etc. so she has the whole picture. I don't let her mess with my psych meds, though. I will take her concerns to my Pdoc and discuss them, but she knows my whole body. I had complications w/my last birth and she knows more about my body than I do!
best,
antigua

I think mine sees it as a major part of her job to keep an eye on my pdoc. Make sure he doesn't get carried away with all those drugs and keep adding and adding and adding. Probably not a bad idea. :) I like having the additional opinion even though I often don't listen to it.

I talk to my internist. He's the one I went to for my anxiety and he's the one who eventually realized that I was depressed also. He knows all about my grandmother's stroke, my aunt's breast cancer and the end of my marriage. He doesn't rush me and seems to really listen.
