Overheard in court yesterday...

Posted by gardenergirl on July 30, 2004, at 7:42:08

A man was facing the judge for his second DUI (funny, he seemed to have "forgotten" his first one, which was in a neighboring state). When the prosecutor stated what his blood alcohol level was, the brilliant guy said, "Your honor, I actually was the designated driver."

Snort! I don't think that helped his case! He said it proudly, like it was supposed to mitigate his circumstances or something. Sheesh. You certainly see some, er, interesting people in a courtroom.

Another defendant, who's toddler daughter was roaming the halls by herself wondered if the cleaning staff who took the girl to authorities would "keep her until my case is heard?" Um, yeah, no problem. How about I just take her home myself?

So anyway, why was I there? The driver who totalled my car seems to deal with his frequent tickets by getting a court date. Then he appears to hope that the officer and/or witnesses do not appear. He has had a number of tickets dismissed this way. He took one look at me sitting there and pleaded guilty. I got $6 for spending my morming there. Too bad it cost me $4.50 to park! I suppose I could get a cup of generic coffee.

At least it goes on his record now. I think it was really important for you to make sure that he was accountable. Good for you!

So, maybe the morning was a field trip - a chance to observe (appalling) human behavior. I think I'm reaching here...

Did you ask the "father" if he wanted you to adopt his daughter? I wonder what he would have said...

They say "showing up is at least half the battle." I guess you proved it.

GG,

And I thought stupid people just went before TV judges. Sounds like this crowd needs Judge Judy.
