Did anyone read or hear about the 72 yr-old (I believe) widower in Italy (I believe) who put an ad in the newspaper? He wants a family to adopt him as a grandfather, and he'll pay for it. I'm thinking that was an incredibly brave thing for someone to do. And very very emotionally smart. Hmm, I think I'd like him, as a person. Anybody seen him?

i could see myself doing something like that. at that age, to be alone, a good family would be priceless

That actually makes me really sad. I hope that at 72 I don't have to put an ad out to find someone to love me.

When you're 72, friends die, loved ones die (even children) and you can be left alone without wanting it to happen, or doing anything to make it happen. This is a guy who knows what's going to keep him emotionally healthy, he wants to be needed and useful. I think looking at it like he's paying someone to love him is a bit harsh, maybe? Just my two cents, I could've misunderstood.

Why should anybody have to pay for something like that? Elderly *used* to be acknowledged as the wisest and most respected people in society. In many cultures it is still like this. Our Western culture is too busy worrying about anti-aging crud like plastic surgery and the 2.5 kids. Whatever happened to extended families and responsibility to your family?
IMHO...
