I've always been reluctant to try straight therapy because I just feel my anxiety has gotten to the point where nothing short of chemicals could help...What is it all about? Some people really do rave about it. But truly for severe social anxiety?? I am just skeptical.

I had pretty severe anxiety (was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and depression) when I started therapy over a year ago. CBT has really worked well for me, although my T is pretty eclectic in his approach. I would describe him as a mix of CBT and psychodynamic. I'm pretty sure just straight CBT would not have worked for me.
But therapy has worked wonders for me. Of course I have a genuis therapist so that helps! I strongly encourage you to explore therapy for your anxiety.
