I need some feedback - regarding B.R.A.T.

Posted by tootercat on November 1, 2004, at 11:47:57

Hi folks,

Mt sweetie and I are having a disagreement regarding BRAT (Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) as aftercare for vomiting. He says, and I quote "Whoever came up with that is full of ****"
He was specifically commenting on bananas which he declares are full of acid and actually irritate the stomach. Every doctor I've ever been to or talked to and the home rememdy books I've read all say BRAT for vomiting and/or diarrhea. Any thoughts on this? We are both very stubborn so he suggested I do a "survey".

Thanks! I'll be checking frequently for responses.

Just to be very sure about the answer, a child who is actively vomiting should not be given anything other than clear fluids. After vomiting has subsided, or, to treat loose stools, the BRAT diet is recommended. That said, there are other members of the bland foods list. BRAT is just a mnemonic, to help your remember some acceptable foods. Bananas do not irritate the stomach. They are also high in postassium, helping to restore lost electrolytes from vomiting or diarrhea.

If you go to google, and just type in bananas rice applesauce toast BRAT in the search window, you'll get page after page of confirmatory evidence for this list. One example:

Thanks Lar,

This is for a 37 year old woman (his daughter)
He said bananas have acid and every site I have since looked at says that bananas are one of the non acidic fruits (along with apples and peaches)

I will go check out the site you gave me thelink to...thanks again.
We also have a disagrement about sports drinks to replace electrolytes.....in the past gatorade has been recommended to me but I realize it has alot of sugar and may not be the best solution for all.

I don't know why I assumed you were talking about a child....

Bananas are about as perfect a food for an upset stomach as there is.

You're welcome.

Gatorade is more than electrolytes. The sugar is there to replenish blood sugar lost through exertion. If you go anaerobic (i.e. run out of sugar), your muscles start producing lactate, which leads to cramping.

Gatorade is not best for simple sweating. It is best for sweating that comes with physical exertion.

Just last week on the news a Dr. was talking about over the counter acid reflux medications, and mentioned that for many people banannas are the cause of acid reflux. I remembered this specifically because it surprised me, as I've always been told that they are good for an upset stomache, and well, they work for me most of the time despite what the Dr. said.

Thanks Gab. Turns out his other daughter who is a nutritionist/nurse validated what I said....

When I feel that bad I use Kuzu root, ginger and tamari in a hot drink. If you need the recipe I will help out.
Bananas are very hard on my partners stomach. I can't imagine giving him this food...
toast with ghee and fried ginger and salt works wonders after a fever.
Ginger seems to be the magic ingredient.
Maybe Ginger wonder syrup by New Chapter would be the best cure....it has honey and ginger you could put it in hot water.
I find Kuzu very soothing but you have to cook it right.

When my kids were little we used the BRAT (or BART) diet for diarrhea. The docs recommended Pedialyte (an electrolyte solution) for rehydration if the diarrhea was severe or if there had been vomiting.
