why is sex such a taboo subject?

Posted by happyflower on June 17, 2005, at 13:50:47

Sex is one of the most wonderful things in the world. Why is it so taboo to discuss it? Do people think they are so special or that they know sometime we don't. Yes it is personal but people are not that different. I think if people could discuss it freely it would solve a lot of unhappy people out there. Sex is a very beautiful and natural thing to share with another. Why not talk about it and tell everyone how great it is?

perhaps because some of us experienced csa and so sex is not a happy, natural subject--it can be terrifying and horrible. Not everyone has been subject to csa, of course, but for some of us that makes it taboo, or very difficult to deal with. I do support your view when i'm talking to my daughter about it, but she has no demons.

I think I am asking in a more general sense. I am talking about people who haven't been abused. I certainly understand the issues of CSA and understand why it would taboo for them. I am just talking about societies view in general.

Good question-- I don't understand it either.

My husband is a pastor and I often speak to women's groups (Ladies Conferences). I often address the issue of sex (between husband and wife) and how vital and important it is.

People act like a woman married to a pastor shouldn't even know what sex is. ROFL As if my husband isn't exactly like every other man with a penis in the world.. But anyway. ROFL

I love to tell people, " I sleep with my pastor." That always gets the big eyeballs out. lol.

I suspect it's because a lot of people are unhappy about their sex lives for one reason or another. I always find it easier to talk about sex when sex is going fairly well for me. But when I was very depressed sex was a total nightmare and I didn't want to talk about it. I even found it difficult to hear other people talking about it.

I notice, though, that it seems perfectly acceptable in general society to discuss the sex lives of politicians and celebrities as if they weren't entitled to any privacy. To me, that's quite odd.

But when things are going well between my husband and me, I want to tell everyone!

sorry HF I just couldnt resist.. I really dont see it as taboo, But I know that there are alot of people who do.
My thoughts on it are that religion played a role in it and thorugh history has been a private thing, altough not in all cultures. there are some cultures I forget where, where they actually prepare the kids for it starting at 7 or 8. It has just stuck...but i do think times are a changing and sex is quickly losing its association with private.
