I am reminded by the post up above of a very annoying thing I had to do to obtain one of my jobs. It seems first of all that almost all of them require drug screens, annoying enough? Not quite. Since I naturally have to disclose any and all medication I take at these lovely employee health dept. physicals, I always get to tell these strangers that I take an antidepressant and a benzo for depression and anxiety. One time I had to get a letter from my psychiatrist that would clear me for work. OK, I can understand the practical reasons for that, but it really bothered me. I felt like I needed to prove myself competent to work, not at all comforting to my already shaky self-esteem. In fact I found it insulting. I also did not appreciate that instrument shoved up my nostrils to check for damage to my septum (just in case I was a coke addict).
AND
I hate a coworker of mine, OK I intensely dislike her. I hate workplace politics. I want to crush her like a bug. She is SOOOOOO condascending and demeaning it oozes from her pores, and she hardly bathes. AAARRRGHHH!
thank you for your attention if you got this far.

It seems like the bigger company you work for the worse the politics. I once worked for a huge company and I detested it. If you got caught smoking in the bathroom, you were fired. However, the couple who was caught having sex in the ladies room were only suspended for 3 days! Nothing they did made a lot of sense.
Now I work for a mom & pop store and I love it!
You know what would be fun regarding the lady you hate? Go out of your way to be nice to her each and every time she's a bitch. It will drive her crazy and make her squirm trying to figure out what you're up to! She'll be ate up and you will have done nothing to get into trouble! Plus if you do this and shift the focus from how much you hate her to how much fun it is to mess with her work might not seem to be quite as bad.

Wow, that employee physical thing sounds awful. How intrusive.

I like crazyt's solution to this. It's better than letting it eat away at your sanity.
My own way of dealing with workplace politics is to imagine the annoying person doing something particularly embarrassing and getting caught. I've heard that imagining the person in their underwear can work, though my own method takes things a little farther (too embarrassing to write about in a public forum I think!). Just find something that works for you!

Thanks for the responses and advice. It's a good idea. Can you believe some of the things you have to put up with to earn a living? Thankfully I was able to resolve that issue to enough of a degree that it doesn't bother me any more, but I shall be careful in the future in the way I deal with her. I hate getting caught up in this stuff!!
