Bonjour Lyn ou plutôt Line,Comment ça va?
La Louisiane faisait parti de la Nouvelle-France (Lower Canada).
Napoléon (Emperor of France) sold Louisiana to the US for $15 million in 1803. At the time, it was the "greatest real-estate deal in the history of the US" and facilitated the opening of the continent by means the Mississippi River.
And we know the rest of the history.
Bye.

Hi Maximus, Do you want to know what is so sad?
When my mom and dad were in school (I am 34), The teacher would spank their hands with a ruler if they were caught speaking French. As soon as that generation of people die, I am afraid that we will lose our French heritage forever.
I can understand French, but I can only speak it a little. Our parents spoke French when they did not want us kids to here what they were saying.
I am also sure the the French we speak is very broken.
Do you guys say Sha!!!?

I'm afraid too. It depends also on your State and your Governor to protect this language and its legacy.
> I can understand French, but I can only speak it a little. Our parents spoke French when they did not want us kids to here what they were saying. It is sad. I wonder why they did not want to. Anyway if you want a family course i can always do a little trip there ;-) I think i would love the Mardi gras and my little little cousins ;-)
> I am also sure the the French we speak is very broken.May be may be not. But i'm sure you have a nicer accent than a pure anglo :-) On my side i'm not bilanguale. I'm at ease to have a good discussion but no more.

Bye.

I am probably spelling "sha" wrong. It is an expression that we use when we think something is sweet or cute like "sha little baby"
Hey do you guys have last names like Doucet, Soileau, Sylvester, Thibodeaux, Fontenot?

It's crazy the difference having heard French on a regular basis can make. At the French immersion I attended this summer, there were some students who were more technically proficient than I was, but all the animators had me pegged as the sole Québec native among the students within the first week. The majority of the other students had an accent which I found kind of disorienting in a way I find hard to pinpoint. The result was a completely different sound than would be heard from a local student of the same language level.
Then again, my own accent turned out by the end to be a pretty odd mix of anglophone and some Québecois, which amused the animators to no end. At the banquet where the prohibition on speaking English was lifted, everyone then proceeded to tell me how strange I sounded in English. So now not only do I feel like an absolute poser speaking in French, I feel awkward speaking my own mother tongue. Maybe I ought to carry a whiteboard and marker around and stick to that. ;-)
This is the end of the thread.
