Rosa Parks

Its so difficult for me to comprehend the world she lived in and the things she must have witnessed. I just can't wrap my mind around it. I don't understand how grown people could treat other human beings the way way they did back then! A grown man wanting a women to get up and give him her seat??? I mean, who in the hell did he think he was?!?! Royalty? I can't even imagine the arrogance.

I realize in some places it isn't much better these days, but its at least something that our government honored her the way they did. It gives me a little bit of hope for the human race.

In the South. Up North where I used to live it was never like that. Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah, I lived in an East Tx town as a teenager, and it was LITERALLY segragated. This was in the 80's. I was just flabbergasted. At that age I hadn't given it much thought, and I wouldn't totally understand until later, but I just couldn't believe this town was 'so behind the times!' I had spent most of my life up north, so I guess things were a little different there.

My parents raised me to believe that racial discrimination was not only wrong, but an out-right sin. In retrospect I can see they weren't always practicing what they preached, but they made sure they instilled it in us. They were born in the 40's and teenagers in the 50's, so I guess I should be grateful.

I wish I could just fast forward to the future where everyone is the same shade, like cocoa or something.

I listened to some of the rebroadcasts of the tributes paid to Rosa Parks. Compelling words. It is difficult to fathom just how different the American life was just 50 years ago, and frustrating to see how it is now. Like if it isn't on CNN or Fox, it isn't happening.
Someone at the funeral spoke about how poverty is the weapon of mass destruction that we should be afraid of. It is so true.

Since I stopped working I no longer have to listen to the daily evidence of racial prejudice. It is rife in all the places I've worked in so far in Florida. Truly, it is shameful.
