After reading about the tragic accident in the mine in West Virginia, I wonder why robots aren't used to do the mining. It is such a dangerous job. If robots can be used to perform surgery on humans, including surgery at a distance, and if robots can be used for deep sea and outer space exploration, why can't robots be used for most of the mining? I understand that one of the main problems in the mines is the risk of explosions caused by a spark from just about any source that ignites the gases. There must be a way to minimize this risk.

You'd think there would be something. It is so awful what happened.

There was a mine explosion and 13 miners were trapped. The last I heard they only had found one of the bodies. I lose track of the news a lot too.

It's very late right now. I just read that 12 of the 13 miners were found alive!

When I posted the above "Good News," I had just read on my ISP's "Top News Stories" that 12 of the 13 miners were found alive. Now I'm reading conflicting news elsewhere. I apologize if I have reported incorrectly. Next time, I'll wait until I'm sure before posting.

Dear Babblers,
I'm sorry for incorrectly reporting the news about the miners. The Internet Service Provider that I've been threatening to drop reported that 12 of the 13 miners were alive. Now, I hear that CNN is reporting that only one miner is alive.
I should know better than to trust my ISP (or any network news stations, for that matter).
Although I still don't know for sure, it appears as if most of the miners died. I must say that, based on the news reports from early on Tuesday, it seemed unlikely that anyone could have survived either the explosion or the high levels of toxic gases.

This mine has apparently had something like 165 safety violations in the past year! The guy who owns it is known to go along and by up mines at cheap dirt prices and operate them in the same way. The coward was SUPPOSED to give a news conference this morning, but has ran away and nobody knows where to find him. WHY are people not demanding these 'Capitalist Fascists' do things like provide excellent safety...and while where at it...how about REALLY good wages...full health care....oh man, all of the fundamental basic rights we have as human beings. Or is it...corporations have rights *over* people? I say...rise up, bring these corporate f*ckers to trial...and let 'em do 100 years plus life without parole!
Mad and sad,
Jay

I saw a picture of a couple of the miners and such pain and difficult lives etched in those faces.
It just struck me that what's really sad is not that they died but how they must have lived.

Hi Cricket,
I hear talk about the miners' families suing the mining company that ignored the hundreds of safety violations.
I don't think there are many other employers in that area.

You've all read it I guess. "tell all - I see them on the other side. It wasn't bad, I just went to sleep. I love you."
There's moral leadership for you, from the only place we get it these days, from those at the bottom of the heap. I find it deeply moving.
