It's my day off.

Yeah well, I'm a little off every day, but I went junking this morning.

There is this totally disgusting hole of a store uptown, I swear the guy finds most of his inventory picking trash and taking garage sale left-overs, and I really feel the need to shower immediately upon leaving, but I almost always come home with a fab find or 10!

The guy marks every item with masking tape price tags. All items are 1/2 price, unless the masking tape says 'not 1/2 price', which most of them do! LOL! (My favorites are the .05 items not 1/2 price...)

I'm always amazed at his organization. All the capless Avon bottles from the 70's are all together. All of the old plastic fly swatters are together. Gallon sized ziplock bags of used knee-hi hose are together. He has 2 full buildings of crap and is better organized throughout than I am in any cabinet in my home!

Any body else like to hunt for retro/antique treasures, especially in skanky stores? ;~}

You found me out. I have made some incredible finds in some of these places. One, in particular, is in an old barn, so full of stuff that there is scarcely any room to move. Some of the things are so far burried behind others that there is no way to get to them, and if you want to see or buy something, you have to come back the next day after he has had time to pull it out.
When I was married, we would take trips, and we would drive through all of these back roads, looking for antique and junk shops. It was alot of fun, and I miss those days. I remember one little shop in PA where I found some really cool old sheet music. Another had a collection of medical instruments. They all seem to have something interesting.
Thanks for the memories.

Except I live in such a small town, you never find anything good.

Twice a year, there are trash pick-up days. You haul your trash (bigger items the regular garbage men won't take) out to the curb and the city picks it up to haul it away for you free. This is always great! You don't have to climb into anything, you can drive by and make your selections! ;~}

My dad was a dumpster diver. My first bike he made primarily out of parts he found on the curb. that's not a "we were so poor" story. He was/is a metal worker type guy. I had the coolest bike in the hood. It was a lowrider before the concept of a lowrider bike had made it to our city. And it was painted a cool metal grey color.

I love to junk shop, I can spend hours going book by book or record by record looking for that one rare or interesting 25 cent or 2.00 dollar item. It's my hobby. Someday it will be my business. I don't think e-bay will ruin everything forever. There will still be stuff, and there will still be people who want to look at it and hold it in their hand before they purchase it.

Maybe you and my husband can go dumpster diving together. Right now he's diving into the ones around our new house. For,4x4's to make shelving with in the garage. No it isn't going to enter my house. Fondly, Phillipa

I agree, James. It's the thrill of the hunt. Looking and digging and holding and getting a little dirty.

Ebay's not nearly as fun as it used to be 3 or 4 years ago. Not since it became so commercialized.

Hurry up with that store! ;~}
