Posted by catmint on February 2, 2006, at 23:02:43

Well,

Sorry no more pych meds for me.

Coming off Lamictal hard and still no peace!!!!!

Yet, how can I convince some of those who love me that I do not want to be in the psych med world anymore........

"But you do so much better on meds" they say,

Really they don't have a clue what it's like.

I believe that you can have faith in science. I believe in miracles, but I also believe that God has blessed us with meds.

I have seen miracles in which people no longer need "science" I have also seen God use "science" to help people. He meets us where we are in our faith.

You don't have to take meds, and you don't have to have faith, but when life hits you in the mouth, you need something. Maintaining is the hardest thing. It takes whatever it takes. God save, Meds treat, Me hurt.

Catmint,
Science vs. Faith is a false dichotomy. I trust both. That's not to say that you need meds or that I personally think you should be taking them. That's up to you.
I'm assuming that with your statement, that if you are giving up on science, that you are stepping into faith. I think that faith and science are co-mingled. I believe that deity gives us science as just one more means to discover how truly beautiful and unfathomable creation really is. After all, pure science is nothing other than man's attempt to understand nature. Engineering, on the other hand is man's attempt to control nature.
I believe that deity put everything we need here on earth to help us stay healthy. In it's purest sense, that includes a varied and balanced diet. In my case, I go beyond that and include the meds that keep me stable. Maybe someday I'll find some herbal alternative to the meds I take, but I'm not ready to toss science out the window. Personally, I've been too sick in the past, and I'm doing really well right now. (Ok, it's almost 2:00 in the morning, and I've been feeling a little hypo-manic, but when has that ever been a bad thing... :-) )
I guess it's really time for sleep. I wish you the best.

I think you should tell them "I ain't taking these drugs anymore because they make me feel like sh*t, and if you don't like it then tough!"

I completely agree with you Lynn, I think that was really well put too.
I don't understand why the two have to be polarized.
It reminds me of that old joke that comes in many forms.. about the guy who's lying on the sidewalk bleeding and an ambulance comes by and he says "No I'm waiting for God to save me" And then a Nurse comes by and asks to help him and he says "No, I'm waiting for God to save me"
And then a Doctor walks by and he says..the same thing.

He dies, and says to God "Where were you?"
And God said "What do you mean? I sent you a nurse, a doctor and an ambulance!"

Someday they'll understand all this crap (mental illness, the brain, ect) and will be able to actually give us the exact chemical we're missing or find some sort of therapy that creates it. Who knows. Until then its a tight rope for all of us. We have to just try things and see what happens.

Maybe your family would feel better if you stop the meds while being monitored by a therapist or Psychologist. That way you don't have to rely on 'only' your impressions, but can have a professional to bounce things off of and to make sure you don't go off the deep end.

Keep us posted on how its going!
