The Age of Being Unwell

Posted by curtm on April 23, 2006, at 0:27:20

Sometimes I wonder if we have spiraled into an age of putting a name on everything, trying to search for answers to our given feelings. Are we not ok with who we are? Do we need to define ourselves and others? I/he/she feel or act this way, so I must be that. I do it to myself. I do it to my kid (is he normal or does he have ODD?) I do it to my wife. I do it to my dog. In this age there is a diagnosis for everything and there are only more to come. I don't take for granted the extreme conditions some people must have help with, but I would bet this question has crossed everyone's mind at one time or another. Maybe it just make us feel better to do that. I sometimes think I might be taking the easy way out...

By the way, I really DON'T psychoanalyze my dog. :#

I think you're right; there is some comfort in "labeling"-I have panic disorder, so when I feel really awful, I can say to myself, "guess why? Because you have panic disorder" But your inferred point, do I really know anything more about what's happening with me by labeling it than just saying it's the way I am, is a good one, I think.

My cat is my therapist. When I'm in bad shape, she comes over and sits next to me, on me, whatever and purrs and purrs. She knows...

I think it's very valuable to have an idea of what type of illness you may be experiencing. Knowing that I am BP instead of just bouncing in and out of deep depression has helped me regulate my life in relation to the BP. It has also given me the opportunity to find meds that offer at least some help.

Moreover, if I didn't know what OCD is and did not know I was experiencing it, I'd think I was going insane. Rather than trying CBT and various meds, I might have given up on everything thinking I was just nuts.

Working hard to find the right diagnosis and the correct treatment is more than just grabbing at labels. It's finding your reality, and then dealing with it.

A purring kitty will fix everything. If only you could get them in pill form, then they won't claw the furniture.

If you could put "kitty purring on my lap" into a pill form, it would outsell Lexapro. And work better too, I imagine. :-)

Thank you. Your outlook on it is very comforting.
I wish you well.
