I have my computer in my room, and a few nights ago, I heard this maniacal laugh at about 2:00AM. I awoke the next morning to find that no matter what, web pages kept popping up until I ran out of memory.
Fortunately, I was able to thwart this behavior somewhat by disconnecting the network cable, and I managed to retrieve most of my important files. Then I reformatted my main hard drive and started again mostly from scratch.
So that took a few days, and I wasn't able to read my usual boards. I'm trying to catch up now. My first reaction was to try to trace the IP address of the offending party, look up a physical address and do nasty homicidal things to the person. I managed to calm down though, and increased the security on my machine.
Basically, I was p*ss*d and wanted to k*ll someone. Reason and religion prevailed though and life went on without me having to worry about jail.
Anyway, that's been the past few days for me. I'm still re-installing software, but survived.

I'm sorry!! What a tremendous hassle!
Why do people do such malicious things??
Perhaps we will never know, but I hope you salvage as much as possible.

Hi Dee,
You're so lucky that you know what to do if someone hacks in. I'd be at the mercy of a helpdesk and by time I get done pushing one for, two for, three for, the hackers would have gotten what they wanted and ran.
I'm glad you decided against anything violent, but if you can still trace their physical address, put them on mailing lists. Submit their artwork to the Famous Artist's School *draw blinky the turtle.* Sign them up for free offers at grocery stores. Plus catalogs, lots of catalogs.

Firewall firewall firewall!!
You're using broadband right? get a router with built in hardware firewall.. thats your cheapest and quickest option.
I have NO faith in software ones, as once they've got to your machine, they can crack anything. Better to stop them even getting that far!

Actually, when they hacked in, I was running both a hardware and a software firewall. I think they exploited a program that was running and managed to tunnel through it. I'll now only leave programs running while I'm using them. I've also strenghtend my firewall protection.
Such is life. It's sad that people get their thrills by causing others misery. I'd hate to see what their love life is like... :(
Sad, sick, sorry, saprogenic slime.
Sigh.--Dee
