Speaking of coffins...

Posted by All Done on May 26, 2006, at 14:29:08

I was in the car with my mom for a few hours the other day. She talks. A lot. She worries about a lot, including her inevitable funeral. So, this is how the conversation goes.

Mom: Oh! I meant to tell you, when I die, you should get my casket at Costco.

Me: Umm...okay?

Mom: I saw them when I was there the other day and they're actually kinda *neat*!

Me: Umm...well...uh, how would we get it to the funeral home?

Mom: Oh, I'm sure any old truck would do.

Me: Umm...

Mom: You'd save maybe a couple thousand dollars.

Me: (long pause)...okay.

I wonder if I should be worrying about my funeral instead. She literally sucks the life out of me.

Sorry, but thats quite a normal conversation for my family!! Last time we were all together, we decided we want to club together, buy some land, and when we die, get flash frozen with liquid nitrogen and then smashed on the land, and a tree planted where you're smashed. Very environmentaly friendly, and the nitrogen will help the tree grow!

Is it wierd to discuss that?! :)

Wow! You guys are impressive! :) How well thought out and considerate of those you'll leave behind.

Well, I actually don't have a problem discussing the details of her funeral arrangements. She wants what she wants. I think the weirdness may lie in the whole Costco purchase. And the delivery by "any old truck". Although, I have discovered that Costco delievers for free. I just have to remember that "Costco.com will only accept a return of a casket due to freight or cosmetic damage from shipping."

Hmm...I'm starting to wonder if I'm the weird one.

(I'm also starting to wonder if I'm walking a fine line of joking about death. Any civility buddies out there?)

When my dad was dying, he was terribly upset at the amount of money that would be "wasted" on his coffin (he also wanted to be cremated).. It was actually the only thing that was near an argument when the day came we had to make the arrangements for him..

And, I don't think we're making light of death. We're making the process *afterwards* less daunting *s*

Wellll....

At least she was trying to be thoughtful. :)

My mother not only wants to be buried in a different state (which is fine), but she wants wakes and services in both states. I've been noncommittal.

After my grandmother's death, when the issue of burial/cremation came up, I asked my mother what she wanted.

She said she wanted to be stuffed, and put in her living room. I told her I would, with one hand out so I'd have a place to put my car keys where I could always find them. And, being my mother, she laughed. (She thinks I'm funny. Go figure.)

We do talk about that sort of thing, too, although never seriously. I think I'll suggest Nikki's solution to her. I'm sure she'd love it. (Nikki? You gonna come visit me? I'll take you to meet The Mom?)
