Grrrrr!!!

Posted by TexasChic on July 25, 2006, at 19:56:02

Okay, work was really frusterating today. As I'm being trained I'm beginning to realize I know alot more about the programs than the people training me do. I swear I'm not being egotistical! I know I'm going to need them to teach me the particulars about the company, and there's always something to left to learn about a program, always. But they don't even understand my QUESTIONS! And that wouldn't be so bad, I wouldn't even MENTION it except they seem to think I'm the one who doesn't know anything!!!

Its really only the chic I'm replacing who's making the assumptions, and I was warned ahead of time that she was a 'know it all', but I feel like the others are listening to her. I mean, why wouldn't they, they don't know any different.

She got pissed off at me today and told others I didn't know that much about the program. It was VERY simple stuff she was telling me, and she wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain that I knew how to do it. I mean, here's a simplistic example of how it went; I ask where to put my purse, and she says, "Okay, first you have to OPEN the drawer, then you have to PLACE the bag IN IT." And I say, "Yes, but which cabinet do I...." And she interrupts: "You're not listening, you have to OPEN the drawer." That's how she was explaining things to me. And because I wasn't rivited to this annoying stuff, she decided I didn't know anything. Grrrr! I know I've got to just have patience and eventually everyone will know the truth, but its just so annoying!

I just needed to get that off my chest. I'm not really UPSET about this, its just ANNOYING!!!!

Here's some advice: you were warned that the chick you're replacing is a know it all? Well, her coworkers probably liked working with her as much as you're enjoying being trained by her.

Every time she gets idiotic with you like that, just take a deep breath, and remind yourself how popular you'll be with her soon-to-be-former coworkers! They'll love you, once you've had a chance to show your stuff.

And don't worry too much about them listening to her -- truly. They will filter what she says through their knowledge of her, and you'll get a fair chance.

It's horrible, though, ain't it? I'm sorry you're going through it -- and I'm also sorry that I laughed. It was laughing in recognition, and remembering how I have felt in similar situations...

Take care.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that. And it is funny. I imagine telling some of my former co-workers what she says, and them laughing hysterically (which is exactly what they would do).

For example, an alias is a shortcut you make on the desktop to get to a place on the server. I've never worked anywhere that didn't have the aliases already set up for all the most commonly used places. I usually have the person show me the long way so I'll really know where I'm going. When one lady was going through all the long steps to get somewhere, I asked why she doesn't just use an alias. She said "What's an alias?" Later she was telling me how they recently discovered how when you click on an image in Quark it brings up where it is in Photoshop (this is pretty basic).

The worst was when the girl training me told me I needed a two button (PC) mouse rather than a Mac one. I was like, no-o-o, this will be fine. She insisted again when she couldn't figure out how to work it. Hopefully she'll forget about it.

Uh... Even I know that much about Quark, and I haven't used it in nearly a decade! Gee...

Remember in Spinal Tap? Nigel says their boards are better, because the dials all go to eleven? Just remember the scene -- "these are better, they go to eleven" -- whenever this babe says something stupid...

Good luck.

Isn't it weird when you find yourself in situations like that, where everyone believes something crazy and but you! That's when I post it here. It helps to have someone say, 'yep, that IS crazy'. Deneb's post further down is the same type of thing.

Today I said something to my supervisor, but got the same non-revealing expression on her face as the other woman I spoke to yesterday. I talked to her about a bunch of other things too, so its not like I made a really huge deal about it. But afterwards I said to myself, man why can't I keep my mouth shut? But I'm trying to be more assertive and take up for myself! So I told myself that all I can do is keep trying and learn from my mistakes.

Then, believe it or not, it turned out making things better! I was worried because KnowItAllGirl stopped by and said my supervisor had called her. I was like, oh crap. But she seemed to go out of her way to be helpful and not rude (for the most part). She tried to tell me again that I needed a pc mouse and demonstrated what she thought it couldn't do. And I demonstrated that it could. It was actually kind of an accident (ha!), but it made the point.

Then she wanted me to do the photoshop work while she watched, and I was like, can't I practice a little first? She goes, "They SAID you were so good at photoshop, what's the problem?" I hesitated a little, because that was just very intimidating to me. Then I realized there was nothing else left to but to do it, so I did. And she admitted I was really good! Whew! Passed that test.

Another funny thing that's been happening is I'm so used to having to report my every move, like, "I'm going to lunch now", or "I'm going to HR", or "sorry I took so long, I got lost". My supervisor finally told me, "You don't have to check in with me!" So here I am, no timesheet, I don't have to tell anyone where I am or what I'm doing, I can even choose my own hours! I just don't know how to act! I guess I just need to learn to relax a little, but its hard not to try to prove myself!
