I went to an Asian grocery store yesterday and went hog-wild in the tea aisle!
Here are my purchases
1) japanese tea cup (no handle) hand potted, with very cool glaze and design (4.95)
2) chinese teapot. modern white matte ceramic, with large stainless steel mesh filter and lid to keep about 12-16 oz tea hot. Perfect for whole leaf teas! (4.95)
3) large tin container of Tin Koon Yim Tea. No idea what kind this was until this am. It's a green tea, whole leaf, no processed very much, beyond each leaf being rolled into a small ball about the size of a pea. Unfolds in hot water. Delicious green tea flavor. Not similar to sencha, a little more leafy and fresher- not as much seaweed flavor. $3.95
4) Special Gunpowder. Small box. This must be a smoked green tea. Has a distinctive smoky smell (like gunpowder?) and is made from tea leaves that are rolled and then sliced into tea that looks a bit like blackened minced chives $ 3.50
5) Two "medicinal" teas. Hope these won't make me crazy! (oh, wait, I AM crazy!) Weight-reducing teas made up about 30% of the tea aisle. I figured I might buy one, if it works I'll let you know, but if it doesn't taste okay, I'm throwing it away . Oolong with lotus, cassia , rose, hawthorne, ginseng, and a bunch of things I'm not sure are spelled correctly. || Natural Relaxing Tea. Oolong with uncaria stem, chrysanthemum, skullcap, motherwort, selfheal (WTF is selfheal?!?). 2.65 and 2.89 respectively.
Don't worry Mom, if they make me feel funny or turn my peepee purple, I'll throw them away!
6) premium peony white tea. I doubt that my $1.39 is buying me a very premium white tea, but then again, it's only 1.39 I'm still trying to find a white tea that doesn't taste like dishwater. One of these days, I might splurge and buy a few oz from a really good tea merchant, but in the meanwhile, I have to put up with tea bags.
7) lemon green tea. everyday tea. 89cents for 20 bags.
8) Iron buddha tea. Have no idea if this is a green, black, oolong? tea. Who cares? 99 cents for 25 bags!
You're all invited! But you might want to bring your own cookies, biscuits. There's only Asian food in the house at this point. Nothing resembling pastry-- even Asian-style sweets or pastries (which is intentional- if it's not around, I can't eat it!).-Li
p.s. so dissapointed there were no mussels, not even the frozen green New Zealand mussels for sale... Gonna make it hard to make Seafood soup!

Hi!
Sounds like you went crazy! So how long did it take you to buy all of those teas? It sounds like it when I go to a book store! LOL
I love stores like that, I always find something weird and I am am like what the heck is that? Sometimes they will tell you and you wish you didn't ask. LOL
Well it sounds like you are going to have some nice cozy calm fall days at your house. ;-)

Li are you still with your husband? Sounds like you like tea a lot. Where did the Asian food come in? I didn't know you loved that too. And it so cold and rainy. And let me know if you go crazy too. Love Phillipa

Phillipa,
I'm *always* with my husband.Well, actually, that's not true. We're trying something new out. It's called- Li spends half of every month with husband. The wonderful thing about my dissertation work is that I can do it anywhere where my laptop can go. I've already done the experiments, and the data analysis and writing is going to work out just fine on my computer.
I do have to spend the rest of the time at the uni, though, because I have seminars and meetings and experiments to run. (and T and pdoc appts too...)
Asian food- we always like to try new dishes. I've spent a fair amount of time in Asia, so has husband. Asian supermarkets tend to have a lot of things that are REALLY CHEAP compared to regular stores.
Cheap things include: fresh or frozen seafood, tea, noodles, produce, obviously any kind of Asian sauce or spice- like teriyaki, soy, etc. Sushi supplies, rice. I have very adventurous tastebuds.
Last night we made seafood soup with lemongrass, squid, tilapia, and shrimp-- absolutely delicious :)
I will most definitely let you know if I go crazy. I doubt it we be related to tea!

Meri- I looked but they didn't have it at the Asian Market. I bet a healthfood store would have it. Well! how do Lindenblossom Petals taste? I hope they weren't as nasty as the "weight-reducing tea" that I threw out this am.
Seriously, the only reason one could reduce weight via that tea is that it makes you feel sick to your stomach to swallow something that tastes like rotten vegetables.

Puer mi(?) tan, I think, is nice white tea. The one that translates as silver needles is good. Quite expensive and very nice, like oolong, only cleaner. I have to try chrysanthemum tea. I'd really love to learn how to cook with herbs like astragalus.

I wish you were my Dad! Or, actually, anyone in my real world who had the slightest bit of interest in herbs, teas, 'alternative' stuff.... I don't know anyone apart from me! My bf won't even eat salad (!) or take a vitamin pill, let alone want to cook with herbs like that..... Sigh!

Hey!
Quite nice actually. They were in 'Sleepytime' by Celestial seasonings, which are american I think, so you folks should be familar with them!
It also had chamomile, hawthorne, hmmm some other things....it certainly makes you sleepy!!
Kind regards

Hey! I know sleepytime :) I have had many nice relaxing moments with sleepytime tea. It's the one with the teddy bear in his nightcap and Pj's, right?
Mostly tastes like chamomile, maybe a trace of peppermint. Very drinkable. Doesn't taste like medicine (or rotten veggies) at all!
Meri, I played a mean trick on my carnivore family one time. I used to have to do a lot of the family cooking. One time we had a tiny handful of ground beef, and that's IT! I took the beef and a couple handfuls each of white mushrooms and portobello mushrooms. minced finely in foodprocessor with a piece of stale bread and an egg. Make Cheeseburgers. They never suspected that they were eating 80% veggie patties!! haha :)
