That means to me a lot of people with no health care, then the hospitals sue you you lose your home and you're out on the streets. Well guess I better enjoy before I'm pushing a shopping cart. No food , no car no nothing. Love Phillipa

please keep in mind that a lot of the military spending is related to health care.
yes, the health care costs are soaring in the military world. A lot of that is due to high prices for prescription drugs that are prescribed by doctors who are treating very seriously injured and seriously mentally ill family members and service men and women. Fatal casualties are more rare in modern warfare, but folks are surviving horrific injuries that require months and years of painstaking and extremely expensive rehabilitation.

But $700Bn on new military spending is a lot of money either way. If they didn't spend so much money on war anyway there wouldn't be so many wounded soldiers.
In my world, there would be free healthcare and no wars. :o) At least I have free healthcare here and no warzone, but still. We're not all this lucky.

If you search Google video for "Power of Nightmares" you'll come across a 3-part BBC documentary that discusses the production of enemies and why that's become a political necessity in many disparate parts of the world. Provocative.

I might add... I've always been an aviation buff, and I was recently forwarded an article about the performance of the newest USAF fighter, the F-22, in exercises. This was through an email list, and I asked with whom the US is in competition that we need such pricey weapons. It seems to me that at the leading edge of technology, "we" (the US) is mostly competing with itself.
The most cogent (and cynical) reply came from a Navy engineer, who said the arms race I ask about is between the US Air Force and the US Navy...
I suspect we're gonna get redirected soon :)

my SIL has PTSD and there aren't enough professionals to deal with all of the soldiers that are returning......and now my nephew's wife and son will need help....
we really do need some new fighter planes, don't we? pat
