So who all got slammed by this lovely ice storm last night/today? I definitely did. We have 1-2 inches of ice covering everything. Pretty, but makes things quite difficult.
Sadly, this lovely ice mess got my car. I went out a few minutes ago to try and get it off, while its still light out so I dont have to deal with it at 7am tomorrow, but no luck. I let my defroster run on high for about 20 min and then attacked it with my super-special-double-edged ice scraper, and it didnt even make a dent. Its solid.
Okay, so I'm a bit goofy here but I'm concerned about this! What if I put salt all over the front and back windshield? They use it on the roads, so it might help melt it, right? Any other ideas? I dont want to spend an hour tomorrow morning trying to get this off right before work. I have a feeling we'll be going in on time.
I hope everyone is safe and warm inside their houses. Its nasty out there.

So what's it like driving?
Is there ice on the roads?
Can you see it?
Is it dangerous?

I cant really tell. I havent been out today at all except to my car. They plowed the parking lot and the areas where they hit seem mostly ok... just wet. But the other areas are just a big sheet of ice. I could barely walk on it without slipping. My guess is that the main roads probably arent too terrible, but I dont know. I guess I'll find out in the morning.

Sure. That's a good idea, not goofy. Salt it tonight, and give it time to work.

No ice here but today was the first day that it hasn't snowed!!! I was trying to remember when it started snowing last week, and it was exactly a week ago today because my arky prof made some remark about us having to ration our food because it was snowing... HAHA we never get that much snow
I feel for you! I hope you got out and about OK.
The snow has started melting, and by tomorrow it's suppose to up to +8 celcius, and then freeze at night.
You could also try hot water over your car in the morning before you go out... if you're driving a long ways, otherwise it'd just freeze again when you got out

The salt sounds like a good idea to me!
I love the sound when you sprinkle the chunky salt onto ice on the ground. Sore of a crinkly sound as the salt starts to melt the ice.
I love it when there's ice on all the trees & the wind is blowing & the branches clink together in the wind with the ice clanking together. ALSO when the sun shines on the ice & makes prisms that look like jewels sitting on the trees. I LOVE that. Have seen it only a few times in my life (and Oh My God - on the 19th I'll be 60).
How can that be, that I'll be 60? That's OLD. :-(
Oh well, as it says on my T-shirt. "Gray hair is a small price to pay for this much wisdom"
LOLSeriously, I've gotten used to thinking 60 & even saying 60 - but seeing it on the screen is a bit of a shocker!!
As to ice - I was thinking if you had an extension cord you could use a hair dryer on the windshields but I decided NO - NOT a good idea. It might crack them. Salt is way better!!!
good luck, Kath

Well, all I had was table salt, so I used it. I put it all over the place. As I went to go back inside, I noticed my neighbor was standing outside having a cigarette watching me.. probably thought I'd lost my mind! Oh well. Possible I'll end up with a delayed opening or closure at work tomorow anyway, but I want to be ready. I'll let you know if it works. :)

Why not go out about 20minutes while getting ready turn on the car and the heat and the defroster and that way it will melt before you leave. Used to do that all the time when live up North. Love Phillipa

with hot water - it can crack your windscreen if it's too hot.
Good luck, be careful driving
