Consequences of being sectioned

Posted by Deneb on March 12, 2007, at 22:11:53

I want to know the consequences of my being locked up for 72 hours against my will 2 years ago. Will my employers find out about it if they do a background check?

Did I screw up my employability?

Please don't tell me I've ruined my life.

I don't think most employers even look at that stuff Deneb unless you're getting a job that requires very high security.

I'm currently self employed, but my previous job was at a financial institution and they did EXTENSIVE background checks, they fingerprinted me (sent the prints to the FBI and SEC), and a few other things.

But even with that, I don't think they checked any kind of health issues with me. SO unless you're going to get some kind of James Bond CIA job, I think you're safe. 99% of employers won't even bother to check health/mental issues.

I think they figure unless you walk into the interview with a tin foil hat on and wearing a clown suit, you're sane enough to work there. So don't do that. ;) :p jk I'm sure you're EASILY employable. It shouldn't even be something to worry about. From what I can tell (from reading your posts for nearly a year), you're smart, very nice, and honest. You'll catch some employers eye if you stay optimistic.

Only if you tell them. I could give your the names of three separate pieces of legislation that would protect your medical privacy. Moreover, it is illegal for an employer to even ask such questions.

Nope.

Catastrophism is not something I would ever offer you. You're pretty good at it, all by yourself.

No deneb. Like lar said, you havent messed up anything. They'll never know unless you tell them.

I work for a community mental health agency, with children in their homes. Obviously, I'm getting people in very vulnerable positions, when theyre in pretty serious crisis. I was inpatient in Oct and then again just a week ago. No one there knows, and no one there will. I got the job even with all my mental health history. So not to worry. :)

Thanks for letting me know!

I feel much better knowing I didn't mess things up. I just have to keep trying to get a job. I haven't been trying my hardest.

Ditto, Deneb ......don't worry!!! Unless you had a job that required really specific clearance, I'm sure nobody would even think to look into something like that!
