I thought some people might be interested in this. It's so sad, and shocking that people were encouraging him.

Are you serious they allow chatrooms like this? That's the most horrible thing I've ever seen . Thankfully we are not subjected to things horrible like this. I bet is that had started to happen on this site Dr. Bob would have contacted the internet service the person was using and sent the police. I would hope so. People some that is are horrible and I think very sick to goad someone to do this. I'm sick. Love Phillipa

How terrible. This is why I am worried about sucide threats that we get in chat and on the board sometimes.
It is VERY distressing and even though we don't have cameras, the feeling is the same, such helplessness. Can you imagine how others will feel if a babbler deceided to do this? The guilt would be aweful for everyone who couldn't help even if they wanted to.
Nobody know for sure if the threats are real or not, and allowing these threats not only harm the person who wants to commit sucide, but the people who are left behind are the ones who suffer the most.
What if I deceided to use this forum to do this? What if I deceided to off myself and I tell you all that I am going to OD or hang myself. Most of you don't "know " me in real life, but you know me well. Wouldn't that be the most horrible feeling?
I had a cousin who accidently hung himself after reading a Playboy article years ago. The family is still suffering from the effects and he wasn't trying to even kill himself. This sort of thing "changes" people who have to live with the guilt of "not doing enough". Can any babbler truly deal with that feeling?
Sucide isn't as rare as some think, it actually happens a lot.
I really don't think this site is set up to really help someone who is seriously thinking of doing this, but allowing the threats, is also setting us up for this same thing, because I believe it will happen one of these days. It is sad that it takes for something bad to actually happen before anything is done about it.

The major problem with this is that Dr. Bob or anyone else for that matter is on the site all the time, so our call for help, would be much too late anyways. Maybe we haven't visually been subjected to this stuff, but we have had real threats and actual attempts before which to me feel the same.

Was the sucide threat made on babble? I am sorry I wasn't aware of that.

Hey HF,
Glad you're around so much. It's always great to see you here.
No, I don't think Phillipa meant it that way - no threat was made by pseudoname on these boards. Strange, I was just thinking of him a couple days ago because I made a donation in his name to a suicide prevention organization I belong to. I posted to him sometimes, and knew him for a day or two IRL, which obviously isn't *knowing* a person, but I still miss him somehow :-(

I really didn't want to trigger anyone by mentioning what happened on the board. But if you like I guess you can talk about it. Love Phillipa

Yes -- and...
I can say with certainty that having Babble to turn to probably saved me at least twice. Both times there were friends in open who insisted that I call my therapist and/or stay with them on line. Just having someone recognize how very bad I was feeling got me through those horrid few minutes/hours when nothing else would have. Sometimes we aren't thinking clearly and don't know who to turn to. I agree that we aren't all equiped to deal with a suicide threat, and God forbid, no one should have to deal with the aftermath of a successful suicide. It is super hard. I know first hand.
This article makes me ache. How sad that these folks didn't recognize the truth and reach out to this man. Our world is sometimes a scary dark place. Each of us has to face ourselves eventually and recognize the consequences of our choices.
One of my favorites quotes goes something like, "all it takes for evil to rise is for good men to do nothing." Let's all agree never to do nothing.
This is the end of the thread.
